Zapier is looking for an Sr. Engineer (backend-leaning fullstack) to join our AI Capabilities team. The AI Capabilities team is responsible for building Zapier’s AI platform. They provide the orchestration, tooling, memory, model gateway, code execution, and observability foundations that power every AI experience across Zapier.

Our mission is to help product teams ship high-quality, trustworthy, and easy-to-use AI features quickly and confidently by consolidating core AI backend services into a set of well-designed APIs backed by shared, scalable infrastructure. We focus on building fewer things at a higher level of quality, creating a platform that is intuitive for developers and rock-solid for users.

As a Sr. Engineer on the AI Capabilities team, you’ll work across our backend and frontend surfaces to build durable systems that enable LLMs, agents, and AI-powered workflows to operate seamlessly inside millions of customer automations. You’ll shape the patterns, tools, and infrastructure that define how AI behaves across Zapier in production—not just in prototypes, but at real scale.

We’re looking for backend engineers who bring:

• 5+ years of experience building and maintaining backend systems in production

• Experience with Typescript or JavaScript and Python (Django preferred) ideally

• Experience building integrations, APIs, SDKs, or development platforms

• Experience building AI tools or consuming AI products as a power user (configuring agents, MCP servers, LLMs, etc.)

• Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools like Grafana, Prometheus, Databricks or Datadog

• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS) and CI/CD pipelines

• Some familiarity with event-based architectures and tools like Kafka, SQS, or similar

• Some familiarity experience with relational databases (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL) and performance tuning

• You value collaboration, pairing, and async communication in a remote team environment

• You’re customer-focused. Whether internal or external, you care about solving real problems and creating great experiences

• You love learning and are curious about ambiguous or novel problems. You’re comfortable asking questions, digging in, and figuring things out

• You’ve used AI tooling for work or personal use—or you are willing to dive in and learn fast. You explore new tools, workflows, and ideas to make things more efficient, and are eager to deepen your understanding of AI and use it regularly
