The Sr. Underwriting Ops Associate ensures operational integrity in underwriting processes by validating data, approving quotes, monitoring performance, and partnering across teams to resolve issues.
The summary above was generated by AI

Most of what makes American healthcare expensive isn’t medical care. It’s the machinery wrapped around it: middlemen taking a cut, fraud nobody stops, and billing systems designed to fight over payment instead of deliver care. The result is higher premiums, denied claims, surprise bills, and a system patients increasingly experience as adversarial.

Arlo is rebuilding health insurance for small businesses from first principles: making sure as much of every premium dollar as possible goes to care instead of getting absorbed by the system around it. We do that by identifying fraud earlier, steering members toward higher-quality and lower-cost care, automating operational overhead, and eliminating vendors whose business exists mostly to take a cut.

AI is the foundation that makes this work. We use it across underwriting, operations, clinical programs, and member experience to build an insurer that becomes more efficient as the technology improves.

We’re already operating at meaningful scale: profitable, hundreds of millions in premiums, tens of thousands of members covered, and growing quickly through brokers, employers, and partners. Backed by Upfront Ventures, 8VC, and General Catalyst, with a team from Palantir, YC companies, and longtime healthcare operators.

Role Overview

As Sr. Underwriting Ops Associate you will operate at the intersection of data science, underwriting operations, and sales operations. You will be responsible for the operational integrity of our underwriting process, ensuring that quotes generated by our data science models are supported by accurate inputs, sound risk judgment, and reliable execution.

You will serve as the operational steward of our highly-automated, end-to-end underwriting workflow. Working hand in hand with our underwriting system you will be validating data inputs, approving quotes within authority, monitoring funnel performance, and partnering with sales and operations teams to resolve issues as they arise.

What you will do:

Review and approve RFPs within our established underwriting authority; escalate borderline, complex, or out-of-range submissions

  • Validate inputs derived from broker submissions and external documentation; correct errors directly where appropriate and escalate systemic issues to the data science team for resolution.

  • Monitor underwriting funnel performance, including quote volume, close ratios, quote-to-bind conversion, and broker and segment mix; identify and communicate the drivers behind observed trends.

  • Conduct ongoing analysis of the risk composition of quoted versus bound business, surfacing early indicators of adverse selection or appetite drift.

  • Triage in-flight quote inquiries and coordinate with sales operations, who own broker-facing communication.

  • Partner with health plan operations to support the downstream execution of bound business.

  • Develop and maintain underwriting reporting and dashboards; define and refine the operational metrics that govern the function as it scales.

Required Qualifications
  • Substantive experience in group health, stop-loss or employee benefits underwriting, gained through an underwriting, analytics, or operations role at a carrier, MGU, broker, or insurtech.

  • Strong proficiency in Excel, with the ability to structure analyses, build formula-driven models, and produce well-organized reporting.

  • Demonstrated attention to detail and the ability to identify subtle errors in numerical and written data - a core competency that will be assessed during the interview process.

  • Excellent internal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across data science, sales operations, and health plan operations.

  • Comfort operating in an evolving environment where systems, processes, and tooling are actively being built.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to query and analyze complex datasets independently using SQL, Python, or comparable tools.

  • Experience operating alongside machine learning, AI-assisted, or rules-based automation systems.

  • Familiarity with our self-insured market segment and distribution model.
