Job Description
The Staff Broadcast Reliability Engineer is part of Video Streaming Engineering within the Global Network and Distribution team. This position is based at the Dry Creek office in Centennial, Colorado.
This role supports and maintains critical on-air systems across both on-premises platforms and cloud-based solutions. The engineer will collaborate with networking, cloud engineering, software development, and operations teams to build and sustain high-SLA systems. Also, this position requires participation in a rotating on-call 24/7 L2 Support with the occasional requirement to support tier 1 events in person.
The ideal candidate has experience with broadcast systems such as encoders, decoders, StatMUX, media gateways, broadcast automation systems. The Candidate must have a working knowledge of cloud-based workflows, Linux administration, and IP video distribution. We are looking for a self-starter who can own root cause analysis efforts and work with vendors and peers to find solutions to problems.
Responsibilities
  • Support and maintain high-availability broadcast automation, media, streaming, content management, content delivery, and digital platform workloads operating in AWS.
  • Lead response and troubleshooting for on-air service issues, including outage calls from operations teams across software, cloud, hardware, and broadcast automation systems.
  • Partner with networking engineering, cloud engineering, software development, media engineering, operations, and vendors to research and resolve complex technical problems.
  • Create reusable infrastructure and configuration patterns that enable application and media engineering teams to deploy services consistently, securely, and efficiently.
  • Perform performance analysis, system health checks, preventive maintenance, and reliability improvements across supported technologies.
  • Implement software upgrades, system enhancements, and infrastructure expansion in coordination with internal teams and external vendors.
  • Develop and maintain procedural documentation, support runbooks, operational standards, and change procedures.
  • Mentor and train team members while developing subject matter expertise across key technologies and facilities.
  • Communicate technical processes and requirements to peers, vendors, remote NBCUniversal sites, stations, and cross-functional engineering teams.
  • Must be willing and able to participate in an off-hours on-call rotation to support critical on-air and cloud-based systems.

Qualifications
Qualifications/Requirements:
  • BS in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 7+ years of experience supporting live on-air broadcast, media, streaming, or other high-availability production environments, including senior-level ownership of production systems, incident response, root cause analysis, and vendor or cross-functional engineering coordination.
  • Ability to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex issues across cloud, software, network, hardware, and broadcast automation systems.
  • Customer-focused mindset with a strong understanding of live on-air reliability, operational urgency, and change management.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Legacy on-premises broadcast environments, including encoders, decoders, media gateways, StatMUX, transport stream processing, routing, monitoring, and control systems.
    • Contribution and distribution encoding workflows for facility-to-facility, facility-to-cloud, and B2B video delivery, including SPTS, MPTS, bitrate management, service mapping, and PID management.
    • Familiarity with direct-to-consumer streaming formats and workflows such as CMAF and HLS.
    • SDI and IP video routing systems and their control, preferably GV nVision series, Evertz EQX, EXE, SDVN and Magnum
    • Broadcast automation systems, preferably Grass Valley Morpheus, ICE, DVS, Amagi Cloudport
    • Video stream metadata and ancillary data, including DTMF triggers, timecode user bits, SCTE-35/104 triggers, closed captioning, and Nielsen watermarking.
    • Content switching and blackout workflows that utilize ESNI and ESAM.
    • Automation and control signaling protocols and systems including, but not limited to, serial, GPIO, VGPI, SNMP
    • Video synchronization techniques and systems including, but not limited to, NTSC reference, SMPTE-12M timecode, Network Time Protocol and Precision Time Protocol
    • IP-based connectivity, routing and switching including, but not limited to, routers, switches, firewalls, Cisco DCM, Nevion
    • Single- and multi-view display systems and technology
    • Experience with broadcast monitor and control systems, preferably Evertz VistaLink and Grass Valley iControl
    • Enterprise computing infrastructure (e.g., enterprise servers, client server, storage devices and systems, hardware and software) as applied to the provisioning, management, storage, operation, scheduling, support and maintenance of the infrastructure: Desktop, server and VM technology Storage technology, including SAN, NAS, RAID and Cloud
    • Strong knowledge of Networking/Multicasting and a stong linkux administration.
    • IP video delivery over managed and unmanaged networks, including UDP/RTP multicast and unicast workflows, SMPTE 2022-7 hitless protection, ARQ-based contribution protocols such as Zixi and SRT, and operational troubleshooting of packet loss, jitter, latency, and failover behavior.
    • Network infrastructure supporting broadcast and media workflows, including routers, switches, firewalls, multicast routing, DCM platforms, and facility-to-cloud connectivity.
    • Working knowledge of SDI, IP, and transport stream test equipment, monitoring platforms, and analysis tools, including waveform monitors, transport stream analyzers, packet capture tools, stream probes, and observability platforms used to validate service integrity, PID structure, timing, continuity counters, PCR accuracy, SCTE signaling, and audio/video presence.
    • Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, Splunk, CloudWatch, or similar platforms.

Preferred Requirements:
  • Build reusable modules, templates, and automation patterns that enable consistent, secure deployment of cloud infrastructure.
  • Automate provisioning, configuration, lifecycle management, and decommissioning of cloud resources.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS cloud services and cloud infrastructure supporting production workloads.
  • Experience developing, deploying, or maintaining infrastructure-as-code using Terraform, CloudFormation, or comparable automation frameworks.
  • Familiarity with version control, GitHub-based workflows, CI/CD pipelines, and automated deployment practices.
  • AWS services, cloud infrastructure patterns, IAM concepts, networking, compute, storage, observability, and operational support models.
  • Infrastructure-as-code and automation tools such as Terraform, CloudFormation, GitHub, CI/CD platforms, scripting, and configuration management.
  • Experience with Kubernetes, EKS, containerized workloads, GitOps practices, or cloud application deployment frameworks.
  • Experience with scripting, observability, failure prediction, cloud-based video playout, media workflows, or large-scale data platforms.

  • Hybrid: This position currently has a hybrid schedule, which requires contributing from the office a minimum of four days per week. The Company reserves the right to change in-office requirements at any time.
