The Strategic Planning & Process Innovation, Operational Excellence, and Communications (Strat & Ops) Lead role is an important member of the SSEG (Statistical Sciences & Evidence Generation) leadership team and is responsible for ensuring that the organization is best positioned to deliver on its strategic priorities and remains future-ready. Reporting directly to the VP, Head of SSEG, this role is accountable for optimizing SSEG internal operations and communications, creating measurement and reporting systems, maintaining forums for effective decision making, and leading the coordination and execution of strategic initiatives to ensure continuous improvement. 

This role will be a key contributor to the SSEG leadership team, driving a portfolio of strategic projects, providing oversight, guidance and risk mitigation, in partnership with SSEG LT members and their teams. The role will drive continued operational excellence through process improvement, strategic planning, resource optimization and management, establishment of supportive systems, and strategic communications. 

This role requires an individual who can clarify roles and responsibilities and drive accountability to achieve team success. This is a high-impact role that requires one to lead through influence, successfully navigate a broad, cross-functional and matrixed environment from R&D to commercialization, and manage multiple simultaneous priorities.

Principal Responsibilities

  • Roadmap for the evolution of SSEG functions to ensure the organization remains future-ready.  This includes identifying key capabilities and tools and partnering with stakeholder partners to ensure execution.
  • Evaluation of vendor platforms and solutions against key capabilities and financial targets.
  • Strategy, Priorities, Scorecard and KPIs – Work with the LT to develop a department scorecard, identifying the appropriate KPIs for measurement that outline the impact of the organization and progress along the roadmap.
  • Responsible for the efficient utilization of resources across the teams and have a broad view of the vendor landscape and fit for purpose. Manage adaptations and optimizations in internal-external ratio of resources to drive sustainable impact, maintaining SSEG ownership of critical skills while leveraging outsourcing for routine tasks and response to dynamic demand. Work with LT, finance and procurement to support the deployment of SSEG vendor strategy for effectiveness.
  • Annual Planning and Budget Tracking - Lead annual planning cycle efforts across SSEG including annual AOP planning; work closely with Finance and bespoke matrix partners to plan and achieve budget
  • Drive specific strategic projects on an ad-hoc basis, owning dashboards, timelines, and project management
  • Day to Day Strategy, Information Flow and Communications
    • Be a trusted strategic partner to the Head of SSEG, including proactively highlighting business critical risks/opportunities, and planning/overseeing critical organizational, financial, and operational activities.
    • Oversee and manage the flow of information/key decisions within SSEG and across functions
    • Responsible for strategic meeting management and communications including creating presentations and memos for enterprise leaders.
  • Team responsibility – Manage 1-2 direct reports (FTE’s and vendor).

Requirements/Qualifications

  • BS/BA required, MS/MBA/PhD preferred. 
  • Minimum 7 years of senior leadership and project management experience.
  • Leadership experience as part of a data analytics organization is a plus. 
  • Excellent written and oral storytelling and communication skills, particularly distilling complex or broad topics into executive level strategic comms.
  • Data and metrics driven with ability to drive creativity and rigor in KPIs including strong data analysis and budget management acumen
  • Ability to lead and influence in the matrix and cultivate strong internal/external network
  • Excellent analytical, strategic thinking, and problem solving skills
  • Strong knowledge of project management techniques
  • Current, strong knowledge of AI tools to drive efficiency
  • Good knowledge of analytics technologies (i.e. Power BI, SAS, R, Shiny)
  • Good knowledge of clinical trial data and processes.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Ability to lead a team with decisiveness to solve a complex problem.
  • Good leadership and influence skills to lead without authority across multiple levels of the business to advance departmental goals
  • Ability to establish effective business relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Excellent verbal and written communication/ presentation skills
  • Experience with defining, documenting and developing business processes in a pharmaceutical environment or similarly regulated environment
  • PMP/Scrum Master or Six Sigma certification is a plus

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is: $200,000.00-$275,000.00


Base salary offered is determined through an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.
