About the role

april is looking for a Tax Product Specialist who will support tax products across the organization. This individual will be responsible for ensuring the accuracy of our tax calculations and expanding our e-file product to accommodate a broader range of tax scenarios. Their work will help drive revenue while maintaining compliance standards required for e-filing with the IRS and across all states. At april, our Tax Product Specialists operate at the intersection of data analysis and tax engineering. This role is ideal for someone with a meticulous mindset and an insatiable attention to detail. Do keep in mind that this is a remote role for all parties outside of NYC. Team members residing within the New York City metropolitan area must maintain a minimum on-site presence of three days per week.

Key responsibilities

  • Turn federal and state tax forms and instructions into clean, structured logic our engineering team can actually build from

  • Be the go-to tax brain for product and engineering teams when weird, tricky, or “wait… is this allowed?” questions come up

  • Test our tax software outputs obsessively (and proudly) to make sure the numbers are right every time

  • Stay ahead of changes in the individual tax code so surprises don’t make it into production

Experience

  • Undergraduate in Accounting or a related field (or equivalent real-world experience that proves you know your stuff)

  • Comfort living in Google Sheets

  • Meticulous attention to detail — yes, the kind that notices a missing comma or off-by-point-zero-zero-one error

  • Strong time-management and organizational skills (you can juggle without dropping things)

  • Clear written and verbal communication skills—you can explain tax logic to both tax people and non-tax people

  • Curiosity and grit: you like learning new things and don’t give up when the answer isn’t obvious

  • A problem-solver’s mindset—you enjoy tracking down edge cases until they surrender

Even Better If You Have

  • EA certification (or you’re actively working toward one)

  • 3+ years experience filing individual income taxes

  • Experience reading XML schema and Business Rules

  • A knack for complex logic puzzles, brain teasers, or Sudoku style games

In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
