We are seeking a UX Designer to join the epocrates UX design team to shape innovative experiences that clinicians rely on daily, enabling them to provide better patient care through smarter, streamlined interactions.
Role and responsibilities
As a UX Designer, you will split your focus between two dynamic product zones. On the Monetization zone, you will contribute to crafting engaging user experiences by designing tailored messaging strategies, optimizing the placement of commercial advertising, and managing the user experience for Membership. This includes creating effective upsell messaging and designing seamless subscription account management flows. Your work will directly influence how advertising and membership features integrate smoothly into our platforms while maintaining a positive and cohesive user experience.
On the Foundations zone, you will support the design system team. You will help design, maintain, and evolve reusable design system components that promote consistency, efficiency, and scalability across the company’s products.
Throughout both roles, you will partner with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to translate user needs and business goals into intuitive, high-quality design solutions. This role provides an opportunity to grow your expertise in both customer-facing and internal user experiences, while contributing to the broader design culture within the organization.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
75% - Design execution (primary)
Identify and frame user-centered problems clearly.
Develop low- to high-fidelity designs and prototypes to communicate ideas.
Collaborate on design and upkeep of our multi-platform design system in Figma.
Work with product, engineering, and stakeholders throughout the software development lifecycle to ensure designs meet user needs and design intent.
Partner with the UX team to uphold quality in workflows, interaction design, microcopy, and accessibility.
Create diagrams, journey maps, and UX process artifacts to guide effective solutions.
Collaborate with UX research to discover opportunities and refine designs through testing.
Embrace a “fail fast, learn faster” mindset to encourage experimentation.
Own the design of various cross-platform features.
25% - Design strategy and planning
Collaborate with UX leadership to define project scope and success criteria.
Partner with product and engineering leads to guide strategic direction for key features.
Participate in product backlog prioritization and planning activities.
Participate in foundational user research to understand user workflows, goals, and needs.
Use qualitative and quantitative data in ideation sessions to inform design decisions.
Advocate for user experiences, including commercial advertising partner content.
Support product frameworks like the Opportunity Solution Trees
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's or master's degree in design, HCI, or related field.
Minimum 3 years of experience in UX or Product Design (agency or in-house).
Expert-level skills in Figma for design and prototyping.
Proficient in designing multiple platforms including Responsive Web and native iOS/Android apps.
Strong collaborator, experienced working closely with cross-functional teams (e.g., product, engineering, marketing) and stakeholders or clients.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of influencing diverse stakeholders.
Solid understanding of accessibility standards and UX best practices.
Ability to advocate effectively for user-centered design principles.
Skilled in UX ideation and design methodologies.
Portfolio showcasing strong visual design, aesthetic sensibility, and successful UX/UI projects across diverse teams.
Desired Qualifications
Experience with digital advertising design.
Experience in healthcare, health tech, or digital publishing.
Experience creating AI-powered design solutions.
Hands-on experience using AI tools (e.g., Figma Make, Windsurf, ChatGPT) for ideation, prototyping, and code generation.
Proven ability to leverage UX research for iterative design validation.
Hands-on experience collaborating with design and engineering teams on design system implementation.
Expected Compensation
$107,000 - $181,000The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates. Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
