Job Description:

Are you passionate about the intersection of cutting-edge technology and the built environment? Ryan Companies is looking for a forward-thinking VDC Manager I to join our team in Chicago!

This mid-level role within Ryan’s National Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) Department reports to a Regional Senior VDC Manager or Director of VDC. The position supports project teams in delivering assigned projects by applying Ryan’s VDC processes, procedures, and standards. It includes managing the BIM coordination process with limited oversight and leveraging VDC tools to reduce project risk, improve efficiency, and enhance overall project outcomes.

To be successful in this role, candidates must have experience in Building Information Modeling (BIM) coordination and clash detection, construction coordination workflows and multidisciplinary collaboration, and the application of VDC processes, tools, and implementation on active projects. Candidates should also be able to work effectively with project teams, trade partners, and design stakeholders, while managing coordination efforts with minimal supervision.

Some things you can expect to do:

  • Understand Ryan Safety Policies and Procedures necessary to reside on a construction jobsite.  

  • Understand the VDC Requirements contracts and be able to assist in adjusting them as necessary for project specific requirements. 

  • Interpret and understand design and trade partner agreements, propose adjustments to Ryan project team members and hold partners responsible to signed agreements.  

  • Understand and interpret owner requirements related to model validation and turnover with the oversight from a Senior VDC Manger or Director of VDC  

  • Independently manage the BIM process through the early design phase coordination to set the construction coordination process up for success. 

  • Manage the scheduling, agenda creation, and running of key project milestone meetings (Internal project VDC kickoff, BIM Design Kickoff, BIM Subcontractor Kickoff, etc...). 

  • Attend and contribute to project design meetings at the start of Design Document production 

  • Complete thorough model reviews while utilizing the VDC checklists and processes. 

  • Create the project BIM Execution Plan and independently run the BIM kickoff meetings. 

  • Create the VDC Guide for Project Engagement and review with the Senior VDC Manager or Director of VDC 

  • Independently execute on the VDC Guide for Project Engagement. 

  • Understand overall site logistics and assist the field staff in creating dynamic plans utilizing BIM tools. 

  • Help generate Requests For Information (RFIs) that are identified during the BIM coordination process and track approvals. 

  • Manage the coordination schedule and inform the schedule owner (Senior Supt) of changes and potential impacts to submittal dates due to coordination sign-off dates. 

  • Prepare agendas and minutes for the weekly BIM coordination meetings and keep Ryan’s trade partners on schedule 

  • Process and prepare models, track coordination issues, and follow up with responsible parties to resolve them in a timely manner. 

  • Attend all regularly occurring project team meetings and provide additional support to project teams related to BIM tools and software based on project needs. 

  • Create VDC updates for monthly project updates consistent with the department template. 

  • Manage change process and incorporate updates to the federated model that is accessible by all project partners, including Ryan construction, designers and trade partners  

  • Create federated coordination drawings, submit them via the appropriate VDC process and ensure all responsible parties sign-off  

  • Support the estimating process and prepare model quantity take-offs to assist preconstruction and project managers.  

  • Initiate site walks to ensure trade partners are following the coordinated install plan. Document disparities and communicate to the Project Team where concerns are identified. 

  • Perform and suggest additional assignments per Superintendent’s/Project Manager’s direction based on project need. 

  • Initiate and lead efforts with the project team to identify opportunities to resolve constructability issues utilizing Virtual Mockups. 

  • Identify unique project needs that the VDC team can assist the project team with and find creative solutions outside of typical workflows when necessary. 

  • Assist regional teams by producing visual content for RFP responses and development pursuits, including animations, renderings, 4D schedule exhibits, schedule visualizations, site logistics, virtual mockups, and VDC language. Propose out-of-the-box solutions and ideas to the team to help Ryan stand out from our competitors. 

  • Regularly participate in VDC monthly team meetings. Present lessons learned or teach new processes and workflows when asked by a manager. 

  • Expectation to respond to and collaborate with other VDC team members asking for expertise or assistance with their project or VDC standards and processes. 

  • Assist in VDC department initiatives when asked 

  • Identify gaps and opportunities for improvements to department policies and procedures. 

  • Obtain advanced proficiency in Revit, AutoCAD, ACC, Navisworks, Procore, Procore BIM Suit, Synchro, Bluebeam, Rhino and other software programs necessary to complete VDC Manager I tasks. 

Candidate Requirements:

  • Advanced knowledge of building construction and BIM processes. 

  • Advanced communication skills, verbal and written 

  • Intermediate ability to conduct effective presentations 

  • Ability to quickly and effectively solve complex problems 

  • Ability to perform work accurately, completely and in a timely manner 

  • Ability to understand construction schedules, architectural and engineering drawings. 

  • Ability to lead project teams through the VDC process 

  • Ability to build relationships and collaborate within a team, internally and externally 

  • Ability to interpret BIM project requirements and apply to VDC processes 

  • Advanced skills with BIM technology solutions including but not limited to: Autodesk Revit ,Autodesk Navisworks , Autodesk Construction Cloud , Autodesk AutoCAD , Bentley Synchro 4D , Rhino , Bluebeam 

  • Procore BIM processes and workflows 

  • Ability to assume responsibility, interface and communicate effectively. 

  • Willingness to travel, and/or relocate, as needed to execute projects. 

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, construction management or BIM-related field or related two-year certificate combined with a minimum of 2 years industry experience 

  • 5+ years commercial construction experience in a BIM or VDC related role. 

Compensation:

The salary range is between $97,200.00 – 121,500.00 per year. The base salary may vary within the anticipated range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate's knowledge, skills and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include commission and/or an incentive program.
