What makes one doctor different from another? And what makes one doctor a better match for a certain patient? These are the questions that healthcare tech Human Practice is answering with its web platform. Built In Chicago sat down with project manager Oksana Kapeniak and CEO Moses Hohman to hear about how Human Practice is helping Chicagoans find the best doctors and the team of experts behind it:

Their stats: The five-person team is “very close to wrapping up” a seed round with some local investors. Currently, the company works with two hospitals and private practices across primary care, ob-gyn, pediatrics, geriatric medicine, cardiology and plastic surgery, all focused right here in Chicago. Their in-depth provider profiles helped 800 Chicagoans choose a doctor just last month.

What to look out for: “We are also very excited to be working with the 6,000 members of the Neighborhood Parents Network of Chicago to provide a private doctor recommendation sharing tool within their site. The integration with their site pulls together years of recommendations that have been made on the NPN forums into one searchable list. Sounds simple, but it’s shaping up to be really, really powerful.”

Their team: “Our team has over two decades’ combined experience building biomedical software applications. Moses Hohman, founder and CEO, was previously VP of Engineering at SF bay area cheminformatics startup, Collaborative Drug Discovery.Dr. Sehjin Han is co-founder and Chief Medical Officer at Human Practice, as well as a practicing ENT/facial plastic surgeon. Rhett, our head of software, worked with Moses previously in bioinformatics at Northwestern University’s cancer center. We are hiring a head of user experience, and are looking for that unique someone with a strong background in both user research and interaction design.”

Lovin’ the Loop: “We’re located right across the river from the Merchandise Mart and 1871, at Lake and Wacker, also right across the street from the American Hospital Association. We’re excited to be so close to both the tech community and major healthcare industry organizations. That’s part of what makes Chicago such a great location for healthcare IT companies.”
