Opternative's battle in South Carolina
On Monday, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley vetoed a piece of legislation that would have banned online eye exam provider
from offering its services in the state. In a statement issued at the time of the veto, Governor Haley said that expansion of telemedicine remains a priority for her administration.
Update: After the publication of this article, South Carolina's General assembly successfully overrode Governor Haley's veto — effectively banning the Chicago startup from operating in the state.
General Motors brings car sharing program to Chicago
On Thursday, General Motors announced that it is bringing its Maven car sharing program to Chicago. The program, which lets consumers rent Chevrolet, Cadillac and Buick vehicles starting at $8 an hour including fuel and insurance, will be available at 15 sites throughout the city. Chicago is Maven’s fifth launch market.
Glassdoor announces new Chicago office
In a Tuesday press conference, Bay Area recruiting marketplace Glass Door announced that it is opening a 51,000 square foot office in Fulton Market in next year. Over the next five years, the company plans to expand its Chicago staff to 400.
Chicago companies can crowdfund more
Starting this week, Chicago companies can crowdfund up to $1 million across state lines without seeking approval from the SEC, though investors with a net worth or annual income under $100,000 are still subject to a $2,000 investment limit. A separate Illinois law, which went into effect in January, already allowed Illinois companies to raise up to $5,000 locally from individuals who make less than $200,000. [Chicago Tribune]
