Role Snapshot

The Accountant position provides critical support to management by tracking and analyzing financial activities, including expenses, revenues, costs, and statistical data, to inform decision-making. This role involves generating reports, conducting cost/benefit analysis, and facilitating meetings as required. The Accountant serves as a key liaison between financial operations and various departments within the company, ensuring accurate allocation of costs across lines of business. The role may assist in the preparation of the annual budget and supports financial planning efforts to optimize business performance.

Salary Range

$60,000 - $70,000

The base pay offered for this position may vary within the posted range based on your job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

Hybrid Work Location

Our first consideration will be to have this new employee live in the Greater Madison, WI area to take advantage of Hybrid work and collaboration. Employees living within 45 miles of WPS Headquarters (1717 W. Broadway in Madison, WI) will be expected to be able to work in the office 2 days a week.

Secondary priority will be given to remote candidates in WI, IL, MN, or IA. 
**If not regionally local to Madison, WI, frequent travel to our WPS Headquarters will be expected.

In this role you will:

  • Address questions and inquiries from internal operational departments and external vendors, ensuring timely and accurate responses.
  • Prepare general ledger entries from various sources, ensuring accurate record-keeping and adherence to internal controls to maintain financial security.
  • Reconcile assigned accounts, escalating and resolving any discrepancies in a timely manner, and performing additional analysis as necessary.
  • Perform cost allocations to various business lines and subsidiaries for proper and accurate business line financial representation in accordance with Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) and Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR).
  • Reconcile government receipts and reporting related to federal contract segments, including coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proposing and supporting continuous process improvement initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 2 or more years of experience in accounting, finance, or a related field.
  • Solid knowledge and understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, expense and revenue management.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with both external vendors and internal stakeholders across the organization, with the ability to ask clear, targeted questions to obtain the necessary information for task completion.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply sound judgment and follow established policies and procedures when addressing daily operational and financial issues.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and demonstrated experience with technology applications in Finance.
  • Proven experience in identifying and implementing process improvements within accounting functions.
