JOB SUMMARY: The After School Rec Assistant Site Coordinator plays a key leadership role in the day-to-day operation of the After School Rec (ASR) program. Working closely with the Site Coordinator, this position helps ensure program quality, staff accountability, child safety, and smooth transitions throughout the day. The Assistant Site Coordinator is expected to take the initiative, step into a leadership role when needed, and support all elements of program delivery, including activity planning, staff direction, and parent communication. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual with experience in youth programs to expand their leadership responsibilities in a supportive, team-oriented setting. This is a PT 2 position, with the benefits listed below

SUPERVISORY DUTIES:

  • Support the Site Coordinator in supervising ASR Counselors and maintaining a safe, structured environment for participants (Grades K–4)

  • Help provide guidance and support to on-site staff during program hours

  • Assist the Site Coordinator in responding to emergencies and following proper procedures

  • Model positive interactions with youth and help onboard new counselors

  • Support the implementation of program policies and procedures as directed by the Site Coordinator

  • Help coordinate daily staff tasks and ensure counselors are following schedules

  • Communicate with Park District departments (e.g., recreation staff, HR, transportation) as directed or needed

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the Site Coordinator in all aspects of daily operations and program leadership

  • Take lead in the Site Coordinator’s absence, including staff direction, participant supervision, and site communication

  • Assist in mentoring, supporting, and guiding ASR Counselors

  • Help coordinate and lead daily activities such as games, crafts, enrichment projects, and themed events

  • Monitor and uphold child-to-staff ratios and safety standards

  • Actively support behavior management, group transitions, and emergency response when needed

  • Serve as a positive role model for both staff and participants

  • Contribute to the planning and execution of special events and theme days within the program

  • Communicate effectively with Site Coordinator, fellow staff, participants, and parents/guardians

  • Collaborate to ensure supplies are prepared, program spaces are organized, and transitions are smooth

  • Assist with participant check-in/out and maintain accurate attendance when needed

  • Actively uphold and contribute to the Wilmette Park District Comprehensive and Strategic Plan, including the Guiding Principles and Strategic Priorities.

  • Actively contribute to the Park District's sustainability goals.

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Actively support the safety program that will effectively control and reduce accidents.

  • Obey the safety rules, regulations and procedures established by the Wilmette Park District safety program that is pertinent to the activities conducted by the department.

  • Become familiar with and follow safety procedures of the Wilmette Park District including, but not limited to fire, severe weather and evacuation procedures.

  • Promptly report all unsafe actions, practices or conditions observed to immediate supervisor, or Human Resources/Risk Management division

  • Attend and participate in required safety training.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: 

  • Must be at least 18 years old by the position start date

  • Prior experience working with children in a recreational or educational setting

  • Leadership experience or demonstrated initiative in a team setting is strongly preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Ability to think quickly, problem-solve, and make confident decisions under pressure

  • Enthusiastic, collaborative, and able to motivate a team

  • Organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable managing multiple tasks

  • Passionate about creating a safe, positive, and engaging experience for children

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.

  • Frequent standing and walking; occasional sitting, climbing, bending, and kneeling

  • Exposure to cleaning products and indoor/outdoor environments

  • Work is active and may involve moderate to high noise levels

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess CPR/First Aid certificates within three months of hiring, provided by the Park District

  • Complete annual District trainings, including, but not limited to, Sexual Harassment Training annually and Mandated Reporter training every three years

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

The work environment characteristics described herein are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The general work area is indoors, in a smoke-free environment, with controlled temperature and fluorescent lighting. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The outdoor work area depends on the season.

HOURS:

Follows the 2026-2027 D39 School Calendar

  • Monday–Thursday: 3:00–6:00 PM

  • Friday: 2:00–6:00 PM

  • General hours of duty will be approved by the Recreation Supervisor – School Age Programs and the Recreation General Manager

ADDITIONAL OPPORTUNITIES: 
This position follows the District 39 school year calendar and does not operate on non-school days. While there may be opportunities to pick up additional hours through special school-day-off programs (such as Rec on the Road or Rec at the Center), working these shifts is not required and availability is not guaranteed.
