JOIN THE COME AND SEE TEAM
Controller
Colorado Springs, CO or Remote (U.S.) • Full-time • Finance
The greatest story ever told deserves financial stewardship worthy of it, and the people who steward it well deserve to be trusted with real ownership. If you find genuine satisfaction in a clean close, airtight controls, and numbers that tell the truth — we would love to meet you.
ABOUT US
Come and See is the faith-based nonprofit media ministry behind The Chosen. Our mission is inviting everyone to encounter Jesus through exceptional storytelling that brings the Bible to life. From funding production of the series to translating every season into 600 languages and making it freely available around the world, our Team Members work together as collaborators in the greatest mission on earth. And we are just getting started!
ABOUT THE ROLE
As our Controller, you will own the accounting operation behind our mission — the close, the controls, the audit, and the financial reporting our Board, auditors, and donors rely on. You will bring the technical judgment that stands behind our financial statements, turning the generosity entrusted to us into reporting that is accurate, timely, and built to last.
As Come and See has grown, so has the complexity of how we account for it — donor-restricted giving across four Pillars, production funding, translation and localization work across many languages and currencies, and a growing, distributed team. You will bring order and rigor to that complexity, freeing our CFO to focus on strategy and Board-level leadership.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You will be close enough to the ledger to know when something is off, and senior enough to fix the process that caused it. When our CFO is away, you will hold the finance function.
We are also looking for someone as comfortable leveraging AI-powered tools to streamline financial operations as they are with traditional close processes and GAAP compliance — using AI copilots for reconciliations, variance analysis, and reporting, while maintaining the rigor and judgment only an experienced finance leader brings.
You will report to the Chief Financial Officer.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Own the close. Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close, delivering reviewed financial statements under U.S. GAAP for not-for-profits (ASC 958) on an agreed timeline, with variance explanations.
- Steward the ledger. Own the general ledger, chart of accounts, net asset classification, and functional expense allocation methodology.
- Lead reporting and budgeting. Produce reporting packages for the CFO, executive team, and Board Finance/Audit Committee; lead the annual budget process and budget-to-actual reporting.
- Own technical accounting. Handle contributions, grants, royalties, and rebates, including conditional vs. unconditional determinations; research complex or novel transactions and bring well-supported recommendations.
- Keep donor and financial data in sync. Maintain the reconciliation between our donor CRM and the general ledger, and maintain project-level accounting so spend can be reported against the Pillar it serves.
- Lead the audit. Serve as primary auditor contact for our annual external audit; evaluate and respond to proposed adjustments.
- Design our controls. Build and enforce internal controls over financial reporting, including segregation of duties, banking access, payment approvals, and fraud prevention.
- Own compliance. Maintain charitable solicitation, state tax, and multi-state registrations; monitor unrelated business income.
- Authorize payroll. Serve as the final authorization point for each payroll cycle — reviewing the register prepared by People & Culture, resolving exceptions, and releasing payroll. You will authorize, not prepare.
- Oversee AP and contractors. Own accounts payable, expense reimbursement, corporate cards, the vendor master file, and contractor payments, including 1099 reporting.
- Lead and develop the team. Coach the accounting team, build cross-training, and serve as the CFO's primary back-up during absences.
- Modernize how we work. Own our financial systems environment and lead automation — including AI-enabled tools — that reduces manual reconciliation and control risk.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting and an active CPA license.
- Minimum 7 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 5 years in a not-for-profit organization.
- Experience leading and developing accounting staff.
- Working depth in not-for-profit GAAP (ASC 958): net assets, functional expense allocation, and contribution revenue.
- Demonstrated ownership of a full-cycle monthly close and an annual external audit.
- Experience designing internal controls in a lean organization, where segregation of duties must be engineered thoughtfully.
- Multi-state payroll tax and contractor/1099 knowledge; fluency in a mid-market ERP and advanced Excel.
- Experience using AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, or similar) to accelerate financial analysis, draft reports, or automate repetitive accounting tasks, with sound judgment about where human review and controls remain essential.
- A clear communicator with non-financial leaders, comfortable working in a remote, distributed team.
- A personal faith in Jesus and alignment with our mission, values, and Statement of Faith.
BONUS POINTS
- Experience in media, entertainment, or content production/distribution.
- Prior Controller or Assistant Controller experience in a donor-funded organization.
- Multi-currency and international payments experience.
- Experience evaluating or implementing AI-enabled finance tools (automated reconciliation, AI-assisted forecasting, intelligent document processing).
WHY YOU'LL LOVE WORKING HERE
- Meaningful work. Your work directly protects and strengthens the financial foundation behind The Chosen's reach around the world.
- Real trust. You won't just maintain the books — you'll shape the controls, systems, and processes that carry this mission forward.
- Room to grow. Come and See is growing, and the complexity and scope of this role will grow with it.
- Remote flexibility. Work from Colorado Springs or remotely from anywhere in the U.S., with occasional in-person gatherings.

OUR BELIEFS, CULTURE, AND COMMITMENT
At Come and See, every team member plays a vital role in a mission bigger than any one of us. We look for passion for the mission and a genuine capacity to represent our culture and Christian beliefs throughout the selection process for every role. Wherever we serve, we aim to uphold and reflect Jesus in how we live and work together.
While we unite around our mission, we know unity doesn't mean uniformity. Our calling is too great, and our mission is too important not to be intentional about strengthening our team with people from all backgrounds. We believe that varied perspectives — across race, ethnicity, life experience, age, and gender — enrich our ability to share the story of Jesus with the world and help everyone, everywhere, experience the authentic Jesus.
