This position sits within the Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Information Technology (EAIT), a future‑focused community striving to be a global top‑20 leader in engineering, design and technology through creative thinking, innovative technologies and outstanding people. You will be part of a Faculty whose programs and partnerships connect students and staff with world‑leading researchers, industry and emerging technologies that are creating real change in communities around the world.


About the role

As the Director / Associate Dean (Indigenous Engagement), for the Faculty of EAIT, you will work closely with the Executive Dean to shape the Faculty’s strategic direction for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander engagement. You will lead the Faculty’s contribution to UQ’s Reconciliation Action Plan, strengthen partnerships across the University, and ensure Indigenous perspectives, knowledges and priorities are embedded in teaching, research and student support. As a key member of the Faculty Executive, you will provide expert advice, guide policy and represent the Faculty on major committees and initiatives.

In this role, you will foster meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities, industry and government, champion ethical and sustained partnerships, and support Indigenous-led research and learning. You will drive staff capability, support the recruitment and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff and students, and help build a culturally capable and connected Faculty environment. Working collaboratively across Schools, Institutes and central portfolios, you will advance UQ’s commitments to reconciliation, Indigenous success and culturally grounded leadership.

About you

You will be an experienced Indigenous leader with a postgraduate qualification or an equivalent mix of knowledge, cultural authority and professional experience that equips you to lead at a senior level. You will bring demonstrated capability in Indigenous engagement, teaching or research, along with the credibility, influence and relationship‑building skills needed to drive change, lead partnered research, represent the Faculty, and motivate staff through strong communication, diplomacy and cultural leadership.

Note: The local title once appointed is Associate Dean (Indigenous Engagement).  Appointment to the position can be made via the traditional academic pathway, at either Academic Level D or E. Alternatively, for candidates that have a non-traditional academic background, we may appoint via Industry Associate/Industry Professor pathways.

Selection Criteria
  • Demonstrated ability to provide academic leadership in partnered research and professional activities.

  • Proven experience in influencing change within a diverse organisation.

  • Demonstrated use of evidence-informed practices to drive continuous improvements.

  • The credibility and skills to represent the Faculty’s interests in the University and the wider community, and with relevant professional and other bodies.

  • Strong relationships management experience, including negotiation and liaison skills, with a broad range of people at different levels and from different cultures.

  • Strong interpersonal ability and communication skills including diplomacy, collegiality, the ability to work with others to achieve outcomes, the ability to lead and implement change, and to lead and motivate staff.
