Mad Capital is a specialty private credit firm focused on providing financing solutions to the next generation of U.S. agriculture. We manage credit funds that serve organic and transitioning row crop producers in the Midwest and Great Plains, regenerative livestock operators in the Mountain West and Southwest, and organic processing and storage infrastructure nationwide. Our approach combines disciplined underwriting with deep sector expertise to deliver capital that supports both borrower success and strong investor outcomes.

ROLE OVERVIEW

We are seeking an experienced Director of Credit with a strong background in agricultural lending to perform underwriting and credit management across Mad Capital’s lending platform. The Director of Credit will be responsible for assessing and structuring loans with rigor, accuracy, and speed, drawing on deep financial analysis and sector expertise. The ideal candidate is comfortable with transactions ranging from simple $250K retail loans to complex, highly bespoke $10M middle-market loans, and is capable of building robust multi-year financial models from scratch using fundamental data such as yield and price projections.

Beyond underwriting, this individual will refine and scale Mad Capital’s credit processes, incorporating new technologies, automation, and data sources to strengthen decision-making and risk oversight. This individual will work closely with another experienced Director of Credit, as well as operations, portfolio management, and finance teams, to ensure that loans are originated, closed, serviced, and managed with integrity and precision.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Underwriting Agricultural Loans

You own the full credit lifecycle, from collecting and spreading borrower financials to writing the credit analysis, pulling UCC filings, evaluating collateral, packaging the deal, and presenting your recommendation to the credit committee. You don’t wait for information to come to you; you go get it. You’re rigorous, thorough, and organized enough to manage multiple deals at different stages without missing details.

  • Collect, verify, and spread borrower financial data, including balance sheets, income statements, tax returns (personal and entity), and cash flow statements. We fully underwrite each transaction. No scorecards.
  • Pull and analyze lien filings, and review title work to evaluate collateral position and identify potential conflicts.
  • Develop complete credit analyses that identify material risks, propose mitigants, and recommend loan structures that align with borrower needs and portfolio strategy.
  • Evaluate complex collateral pools (crops, livestock, equipment, and real estate), understanding crop insurance assignment, security interests, and nuanced intercreditor dynamics.
  • Prepare credit packages and present underwriting recommendations to the internal investment committee and, when needed, to external stakeholders such as auditors and capital providers.
  • Coordinate with external parties (title companies, appraisers, insurance agents, legal counsel) to assemble closing requirements and ensure loan documentation is complete and accurate before funding.
  • Execute annual reviews and audits of existing loan files.

Google Sheets Modeling & Financial Rigor

You can build financial models from scratch. Given raw yield data, commodity price forecasts, and input cost assumptions, you can construct a multi-year cash flow projection that is auditable, clearly documented, and stress-tested. You know how to identify break points and communicate what the numbers mean for a credit decision. If you rely on Finpack or Moody's to do most of the work, this role isn’t a fit for you.

  • Build and maintain multi-year cash flow projection models in Google Sheets using fundamental data: yield assumptions, commodity prices, input costs, and rotation plans.
  • Run sensitivity and scenario analyses across commodity price swings, weather volatility, and cost shocks, and translate findings into actionable credit recommendations.
  • Maintain accuracy and auditability under time pressure through version control, peer checks, and consistent QC routines.

Borrower Communication & Rapport

You connect with farmers and ranchers on their terms. You pick up the phone without hesitation, build genuine rapport, and are persistent and creative in getting the documents and answers you need to move a deal forward. You balance warmth with tenacity. Borrowers trust you because you understand their operation, and your team trusts you because you keep deals on track.

  • Serve as a primary point of contact with borrowers during the underwriting process, proactively calling to collect documents, clarify financial information, and resolve open items.
  • Build trust with agricultural operators by demonstrating genuine curiosity about their operations, challenges, and goals.
  • Work directly with borrowers to fill data gaps, particularly in transitional or non-standard operations where historical financials may be incomplete or non-predictive.
  • Provide clear, timely guidance on credit conditions and requirements to borrowers and internal stakeholders alike.

Requirements
  • 10+ years of experience in agricultural lending.
  • Track record of $100M minimum in approved loan volume.
  • Strong competency in complex modeling in Google Sheets.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple deals at various stages at once.
  • Expertise in loan structuring, credit analysis, and risk/scenario analysis.
  • Deep commitment to disciplined credit practices and long-term portfolio health.
  • Alignment with Mad Capital’s mission of financing organic and regenerative agriculture.

Benefits
  • $125,000-$150,000 annual salary plus stock options. Final compensation will be determined based on experience and qualifications.
  • Fully covered employee health insurance, and 50% for dependents. Dental and vision are available.
  • 401(k) with 4% employer match.
  • $5,000/year health and wellness budget.
  • Generous paid time off and parental leave policies.

COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & INCLUSION

Mad Capital is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team. We believe that varied perspectives, lived experiences, and identities make us stronger and more effective. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, and veteran status.
