Director of Data Protection - Technology Risk Management
Cyber Risk Management is a growing organization focused on providing expert advice, credible challenge, and effective oversight of information security and technology activities to identify, assess, control, and manage cyber risk throughout the company. This organization plays a critical role in helping to ensure that the company's risk taking entities are aware of the risks inherent in their activities and decisions, the impact of their actions on the company at an enterprise level, and opportunities to reduce, mitigate, or avoid risks altogether. Associates within the Cyber Risk Management organization are highly-skilled information security, cyber, technology, or risk management professionals who have a wealth of experience and a demonstrated ability to provide value-added recommendations and deliver high-impact results in their areas of expertise.
This Director, Cybersecurity Risk will be accountable for establishing and leading Cyber Risk Management functions as related to specific domain(s) of cyber security. This individual will be accountable for the organization's governance of cybersecurity risk domains by developing and implementing executive-level processes responsible for overseeing and managing cybersecurity risk. As part of the second line of defense, you will collaborate closely with leaders in Cyber, Technology, the Lines of Business, and other risk management offices to lead and oversee evaluations of the firm's cybersecurity strategy and priorities and offer independent advice and recommendations regarding ways to further mature the firm's cyber and risk management posture and cyber risk policies. In addition, you will lead the identification and analysis of new or emerging cybersecurity and technology risks to the enterprise as related to your accountable domain(s).
As a leader within a growing organization, you will have the opportunity to shape and further refine your portfolio commensurate with the priorities of the organization and the firm, as well as influence the overall direction of Cyber Risk Management. The position affords opportunities for substantial growth. The demands and high-visibility nature of this position require an expert with a proven ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and who can begin contributing immediately.
Responsibilities:
  • As part of a team, develop and implement processes to provide independent oversight and effective challenge of the firm's cybersecurity priorities.
  • Ensure effective governance by identifying, framing, and presenting risk topics to be discussed by senior management in enterprise cyber risk forums.
  • Draft agendas, manage action items, and coordinate with stakeholders to develop a robust understanding of the risk posture as related to accountable cyber security domain(s).
  • Advise and consult on the development and management of new cybersecurity policies, standards and procedures.
  • Stay current on emerging cyber threats and potential implications to the firm as related to accountable cyber security domain(s).
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues, stakeholders, and leaders across multiple organizations to achieve strategic objectives.
  • Coordinate program-related activities and deliverables to ensure effective collaboration within the team and across stakeholder groups.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or military experience
  • At least 4 years of experience in project management
  • At least 8 years of experience in information security, information technology, or risk management
  • At least 4 years of experience developing, evaluating, or implementing cybersecurity or technology governance structures
  • At least 1 year of experience with cybersecurity policies or information technology policies

Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 4 years of experience developing presentations for senior level audiences
  • At least 4 years of experience with analyzing emerging threats and reports that describe the implications of threat(s)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills across levels of leadership
  • Passion and expertise in cybersecurity, with an ability to be confident, respectful, and articulate when registering dissenting or unpopular opinions
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining superior results
  • Ability to work cross-functionally, individually, and to lead work among a team
  • Execution oriented and a self-motivator
  • Professional security management certifications, such as a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) or Certified Information Security Manager (CISM)

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
McLean, VA: $263,900 - $301,200 for Director, Cyber Technical
Richmond, VA: $239,900 - $273,800 for Director, Cyber Technical
Riverwoods, IL: $239,900 - $273,800 for Director, Cyber Technical
Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate's offer letter.
This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
