The Proportional Representation Hub

American democracy is at a breaking point. Fewer than one in ten House races is competitive, and 97% of incumbents cruise to reelection. For most voters, the outcome is settled before a single ballot is cast. Public trust in democratic institutions keeps eroding as more voters tune out.

The problem isn't the politicians. It's the rules. U.S. elections are distorted by single-winner, winner-take-all districts. A party can win 45% of the vote across a state and still win no power. The Supreme Court's evisceration of the Voting Rights Act has made things worse, carving up communities of color and setting off a redistricting death spiral.

There is a fix, and most of the world already uses it: proportional representation. Districts elect several members, and a party that wins a third of the votes wins about a third of the seats. It ends partisan gerrymandering, reduces the polarization that fuels authoritarianism, creates more opportunity for fair representation of women and people of color, fosters more robust political parties including new, smaller parties, and makes every district competitive.

The Proportional Representation Hub has raised more than $80 million to advance proportional representation at the local, state, and federal levels. We are building a cross-partisan movement big enough to win, and a team of exceptional leaders to reshape the architecture of American democracy itself.

Position summary
