Engineering Manager (Remote)
About the role:
At BenchPrep, with a product and client base focused on learning, it makes sense that our employees are passionate about their own learning and professional growth. As an Engineering Manager, your role is to help your team deliver their best work while ensuring that deliverables are met. You are a hands-on individual contributor within the team, but also lead individual engineers to help them reach their fullest potential. While you bring the subject matter expertise in software design and development to be an effective guide, your energy and sense of accomplishment likely comes from helping others succeed and grow. You like mentoring, training, and providing feedback and are effective at communicating with and supporting a diverse group of employees. You also represent BenchPrep technology to clients, partners, and various third parties so you’re love the challenge of balancing the clients’ immediate needs, the long term product road map, and helping your team become more effective with each sprint
Perhaps you’re an Engineering Manager at another cloud based SaaS company and are looking for a company that values “putting people first” and “never stop learning.” Perhaps you are a Sr. or Lead Software Engineer who has discovered their passion and skill for leading others and wants to move into a role more focused on that area. Or maybe, you can share demonstrated successes leading a development team not at a tech company and you’ve been looking to get into a company where your team creates the product.
Whatever your background, the chance to lead an engaged, inquisitive team that focuses on learning, excites you.
**Skills and experiences we value:
- Effectively leads engineers, both formally and informally, building a collaborative environment which embraces learning and fosters professional growth by valuing input and providing constructive feedback
- Demonstrated success in delivering software engineering projects on time and within budget, ideally in an Agile environment
- Full stack development experience, ideally using part of our technology stack (Ruby on Rails, Javascript, Vue.js, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, Node.js, Kubernetes, AWS/IBM Cloud)
- The ability to problem solve, train, and coach on OOP principles, good programming conventions, writing clean code, effective testing, proper error handling, and writing secure and performant code
- A software engineering mindset with proven work demonstrating critical thinking as it relates to architectural solutions and design paradigms
- Love of learning and a curiosity about ever-changing technology
- Capable of solving complex technical problems, presenting multiple viable architectural solutions, contrasting the pros and cons of each
**Note: We know that excellent candidates can have all sorts of backgrounds and experiences, so please don’t hesitate to apply even if you don’t meet 100% of the listed requirements!

We’re sitting in a pivotal time in the BenchPrep history. The number of learners on our cloud-based learning platform has almost reached 7 million in 2021.
We’re committed to helping students and professionals learn better, and that starts with our own people.
COVID-19:
Speaking of our people, in March 2020, we put safety first and quickly moved our people to working remotely. We’ve learned that our employees are really productive working at home and still (mostly) work remotely. Our first core value is “People First” and the pandemic has reinforced how true this value reigns to us. What is the future of BenchPrep’s plans for working in-office or remote? We haven’t finalized that, but what we do know is that collaboration and connection are our top priorities. Remote, in-office (Chicago), or hybrid... employees know how they work best. Let us know what your preferences or requirements are for being remote only, hybrid or in-office.
Life at BenchPrep:
We work at BenchPrep because we’re dedicated to the mission and each day we have an opportunity to be challenged and learn. We work hard and have lots of fun. Culture is our lifeline at BenchPrep. We celebrate our people, both professionally and personally. We care about learning so much that we offer employees $1,200 annually to develop their skills so they can continue to operate everyday with new skills. It’s no wonder we were selected in Inc’s Best Workplaces of 2020 and Crain’s 2020 Best Places to Work in Chicago lists.
We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
We are looking for high performing and motivated professionals who are excited about the chance to leverage technology to impact the lives of millions of learners. Join us.
