Junior Data Engineer

Position Summary

The Junior Data Engineer will support the development and maintenance of Tecomet's analytics infrastructure and reporting processes to meet the information needs of the organization. This role works closely with senior members of the Data & Analytics team to help ensure our data is accurate, available, and actionable, empowering the organization to make informed decisions quickly. The Junior Data Engineer will build foundational skills across data engineering, ETL/ELT development, and business intelligence, with growing responsibility as experience is gained.

The Junior Data Engineer will assist with configuring source connections, supporting data warehouse and pipeline maintenance, writing and troubleshooting SQL queries, and helping build and maintain Power BI datasets and reports under the guidance of senior data engineers. The ideal candidate is eager to learn, detail-oriented, and interested in developing hands-on experience with Azure cloud data services, Azure Data Factory (ADF), and enterprise BI tools in a regulated, ITAR/EAR manufacturing environment.

Principle Responsibilities

• Data Pipeline & Warehouse Support:
  • Assist in developing and maintaining Azure Data Factory (ADF) pipelines to extract, transform, and load data from source systems into the data warehouse, under senior engineer guidance.
  • Support the monitoring, troubleshooting, and basic maintenance of scheduled ETL/ELT jobs and data pipeline failures.
  • Help source, clean, and transform data from various systems (databases, SaaS applications, spreadsheets, APIs) in collaboration with senior team members and business stakeholders.
  • Write and troubleshoot SQL queries to support data validation, reporting, and ad hoc data requests.
  • Assist with basic performance tuning and data quality checks within Azure SQL Database and other Azure-hosted data stores.
  • Help maintain and update Business Intelligence documentation and the data dictionary.
• Collaboration & Support:
  • Respond to routine end-user questions and support requests related to Power BI reports and datasets.
  • Work with senior engineers and business stakeholders to gather and document basic reporting requirements.
  • Participate in team meetings, knowledge-sharing sessions, and training to build technical and business domain knowledge.
• Continuous Improvement:
  • Stay current on foundational data engineering and BI tools and techniques.
  • Assist in identifying opportunities to automate recurring, manual reporting tasks.
  • Support continuous improvement of data integrity, documentation, and reporting processes.

Qualification Requirements

Credentials/Experience:

• 0-2 years of experience in a Data Engineer, Data Analyst, BI Developer, or related technical role; internship or academic project experience considered.
• Some hands-on exposure to Azure database services (e.g., Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, or Azure Synapse) is required.
• Basic understanding of integrating Power BI with data sources such as SQL Server, Excel, or cloud-based databases is a plus.

Experience/Educational/Training Preferred:

• Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience).
• Exposure to or coursework/project experience with Azure Data Factory (ADF), or a strong willingness and aptitude to quickly learn ADF pipeline development, is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Working knowledge of SQL for querying and extracting data from relational databases.
• Foundational understanding of data warehousing concepts and ETL/ELT processes.
• Basic familiarity with Azure Data Factory (ADF) pipelines, datasets, and linked services, or comparable cloud ETL tooling.
• Familiarity with Azure-hosted database platforms (e.g., Azure SQL Database) and general cloud data storage concepts.
• Good analytical skills and attention to detail, with a developing ability to interpret data and communicate findings clearly.
• Familiarity with agile development methodologies and tools such as Jira and GitHub is a plus.
• Exposure to Power Automate, PowerApps, dbt, or Python is a plus, but not required.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams and senior team members.
• Eagerness to learn, take direction, and grow technical skills within a structured, regulated (ITAR/EAR) enterprise environment.
• Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time across multiple assignments in a fast-paced environment.
