The Hartford’s Reliability Engineering Squad is improving how we architect and implement applications in Amazon Web Services (AWS) using Infrastructure as Code (IaC).

We are looking for Cloud and Reliability Engineers to play a key role in supporting this effort for application migrations as well as new application development and designing new architecture patterns. The primary objective is to design and implement the infrastructure of various backend and frontend applications through code with repeatable patterns. You will be writing code as well as managing people and projects.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office (Columbus, OH, Chicago, IL, Hartford, CT or Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Job Description:

  • Manage Cloud Engineers and Reliability Engineers
  • Manage projects and plan future work
  • Identify, drive and lead in the implementation of products and reference implementations to standardize how we deploy applications in AWS and GCP. Designs reusable architectures and services that can be leveraged by agile teams to improve development velocity.
  • Knows how applications should be engineered by following fault tolerate best practices, with proper data replications and multi region support.
  • Develops applications in Python to support automating manual processes and repeatable decision making.
  • Develops Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform and CloudFormation templates, YAML files, build specifications, and Python Lambda functions to have a completely automated build and release process for all AWS resource infrastructure and code artifacts.
  • Highly knowledgeable of Amazon Web Services including but not limited to Lambda, CloudWatch, ECS, EKS, RDS, S3, IAM, SNS, SQS, EventBridge, Service Catalog.
  • Ability to design systems and implement new software architecture patterns.
  • Mentor Cloud Engineers and Software Engineers.
  • Troubleshoot problems with software and infrastructure.
  • Automating disaster recovery, high availability, and fault tolerance.
  • Present new ideas to leadership and present on topics to improve the learning of others.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally both in speech and in writing.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Math, or any Engineering
  • 2+ years Python experience
  • 1+ years Infrastructure as Code experience, like Terraform, CloudFormation, CDK
  • 4+ years software development experience
  • 2+ years software architecture and systems design experience
  • Great oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong software development knowledge
  • Strong technical knowledge of AWS relating to application development.
  • Software Architecture or Systems Engineering experience
  • Ability to write code to automate manual processes
  • Ability to communicate at all levels within an organization and influence leadership.
  • Proven ability to work with cross functional teams and translate requirements between business, project management and technical projects or programs.

Candidate must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$137,600 - $206,400
