The Chicago White Sox seek an addition to the Player Development team to promote, enhance, and implement the Chicago White Sox Mental Performance Program in collaboration with Player Development personnel.


Responsibilities:
  • Assist players and staff through applied mental performance coaching to support on-field development, performance, and personal well-being.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of an applied mental performance curriculum at scale to enhance player development and coaching processes throughout the CWS Minor League system.
  • Work collaboratively within Player Development to enhance the application of mental performance, promote well-being, and strengthen organizational culture.
  • Assist with enhancing mental performance education for injured and rehabilitating players, as well as supporting international players and staff as they transition to the U.S.
  • Support the referral process for White Sox staff and players with mental health needs to EAPs and/or outsourced professionals while maintaining confidential records.
  • Maintain appropriate professional credentials, including clinical licensure and/or CMPC certification.
  • Participate in the strategic development and application of mental performance systems through applied coaching throughout the organization.
  • Provide individual, short- and long-term support for athletes and coaches with mental performance needs at affiliates and for players recovering from injuries year-round in Arizona.
  • Present psychoeducational workshops regularly to educate staff and players on mental performance topics, in addition to providing education related to overall well-being to enhance mental health literacy and improve day-to-day functioning.
  • Provide consultation and support for Player Development staff, including coaches, administrators, medical staff, and performance staff.
  • Function as an integral member of a multidisciplinary sports medicine team, including athletic trainers, team physicians, strength coaches, sport science staff, and sport dietitians.
  • Develop and support various initiatives to promote overall athlete health, resilience, and acculturation for athletes coming from other countries.
  • Assess the acculturation process of international players to assist with their transition to the U.S. and gather insights to inform best coaching practices across various demographics.
  • If licensed and/or working under the supervision of a licensed mental health provider, screen for mental health concerns such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, substance use, and other mental health disorders.
  • If licensed and/or working under the supervision of a licensed mental health provider, serve as the primary contact for assisting players and staff with the referral process to EAPs. Identify off-site treatment and counseling services for athletes who require a higher level of care or specialized mental health care.
  • If licensed and/or working under the supervision of a licensed mental health provider, provide individual, short- and long-term, multiculturally competent mental health counseling for athletes presenting with diverse concerns. Services may be provided on-site and virtually, as needed and where legally permitted.
  • Manage sensitive and confidential information related to athletes, coaches, and staff with discretion and in accordance with applicable procedures, laws, and ethical codes (ACA, APA, AASP, etc.).
  • Participate in case management, peer consultation, off-season camps, business meetings, and professional development activities.
  • Maintain excellent record-keeping and demonstrate strong communication skills.
Qualifications:
  • CMPC or CMPC eligible upon hire - REQUIRED
  • Completed Masters in Sport Psychology/Performance Psychology - REQUIRED
  • Completed PhD in Clinical Sport Performance Psychology - Preferred
    • Licensed Psychologist - Preferred but NOT required
    • Completed PhD and/or Master’s in Mental Health Counseling or a related field of psychology - Accepted
  • Current License in Mental Health Counseling/license eligible in AZ, NC, AL, IL - Preferred
    • Ability to obtain AZ, NC, AL, IL mental health PSYPACT or COMPACT eligible - Preferred
  • At least 3 years of postgraduate experience providing mental performance (Baseball experience preferred)
    • Knowledge and skills related to high-performance psychology or familiarity with working in an elite competitive sporting environment required (collegiate, professional, Olympic, military etc.)
  • Bilingual (Spanish) - Preferred but NOT required - or moderate knowledge and understanding of the Spanish language.
  • Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate and build strong relationships with players, coaches, front office, and other key stakeholders.
  • Strong writing skills with the ability to maintain regular notes in the CWS record
  • Strong generalist with knowledge and experience in providing mental performance services to elite athletes.
  • Mental Health Counseling experience a plus
  • Knowledge, skills, and experience providing multicultural-competent performance and/or clinical services required.
  • Knowledge, skills, and expertise required to proficiently conduct, document, and evaluate individual, crisis intervention, and consultation/outreach.
Requirements:
  • Relocation to Arizona Required
  • Travel to Spring Training and Affiliates throughout the season
  • Ability to travel, work long hours during the baseball season, and be outside in all weather
