The Opportunity

We are seeking a Product Manager to lead underwriting initiatives that drive smarter, more dynamic risk decisions while supporting growth through Root’s direct, partner, and agent channels. You’ll own a portfolio of initiatives that enable tailored risk interventions and scale classification accuracy—all while maintaining profitability.

You’ll work cross-functionally with Data Science, Engineering, State Management, Legal, and Insurance Ops to evolve Root’s underwriting domain.


Salary Range:  $114,000 - $136,000 (Eligible for competitive bonus and equity offerings)

How You Will Make an Impact

  • Own the 2025 Underwriting roadmap and define the vision for 2026 and beyond
  • Partner with Data Science to design and implement machine learning model based underwriting strategies
  • Lead experiments (A/B tests, causal modeling) to test risk mitigation strategies and measure their impact on profitability, conversion, and retention
  • Support Root’s nationwide expansion by adapting underwriting capabilities to meet the specific regulatory and operational needs of new states
  • Create seamless underwriting experiences that drive profitable growth
  • Lead a team of engineers through the full product lifecycle, from ideation to implementation and iteration
  • Write clear product requirement documentation (PRDs) that align business strategy with engineering plans
  • Cultivate a prioritized product backlog using robust product frameworks and data-driven decision making
  • Measure and analyze the performance of your product area, using insights to drive continuous improvement
  • Facilitate team delivery events using agile practices to ensure consistent, high-quality outputs


What You Will Need to Succeed

  • 3–6 years of product management experience, ideally in fintech, insurtech, or another data-intensive regulated environment.; insurance industry experience highly valued
  • Strong systems thinking and comfort with technical concepts like predictive modeling, APIs, and workflow orchestration
  • Data-driven mindset; experience designing A/B tests, working with analysts, working with data scientists
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex concepts into simple user experiences
  • Experience in agile development methodologies
  • Customer-centric mindset with demonstrated success in improving user experiences
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to multitask and prioritize effectively
  • Adaptable approach to scope and responsibilities in a growing organization
  • Collaborative work style with the ability to influence without direct authority
  • Roll-up-the-sleeves work ethic and "do-what-it-takes" attitude to drive results in a fast-paced environment
