The Team

Morningstar’s Analytics group develops and delivers proprietary methodologies, calculations, and analytical capabilities that help investors evaluate investments and make informed decisions. The Managed Investment Calculations team translates Morningstar’s research and intellectual property into accurate, scalable, and consistent analytics used across Morningstar products.

The Role

We are seeking a Product Manager with strong business analysis and data analysis skills to lead the development and ongoing enhancement of managed investment calculation capabilities.

This role combines product ownership with hands-on analytical work. You will partner with methodology experts, quantitative researchers, engineering, and quality assurance teams to translate investment methodologies and business needs into detailed calculation specifications and reliable production capabilities. You will analyze complex investment datasets, prototype and validate calculations, investigate discrepancies, and ensure that implementations faithfully reflect Morningstar’s proprietary methodologies.

The ideal candidate brings analytical rigor, relevant investment knowledge, and the ability to learn complex financial concepts quickly. You should be comfortable both prioritizing a product backlog and using SQL to investigate underlying data. Prior knowledge of Morningstar’s products or methodologies is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Own product priorities and delivery: Manage the tactical roadmap and backlog for managed investment calculations, balancing new capabilities, methodology enhancements, data quality, and platform improvements.

  • Define business requirements: Partner with product teams, research, operations, and client support to clarify user needs, assess business impact, and establish scope and success criteria.

  • Translate methodologies into calculation specifications: Work with methodology owners to document formulas, input requirements, eligibility rules, calculation frequency, exceptions, and expected outputs.

  • Perform detailed data and business analysis: Use SQL and analytical tools to investigate datasets, assess coverage and quality, map data sources, and understand dependencies and downstream impacts.

  • Prototype and validate calculations: Develop calculation examples and independently verify results, including edge cases, missing data, historical changes, and differences across fund structures and share classes.

  • Drive execution with engineering and QA: Develop actionable user stories and acceptance criteria, resolve implementation questions, and partner on test scenarios, regression coverage, and release readiness.

  • Safeguard calculation quality: Investigate discrepancies and production issues, identify root causes, and prioritize fixes based on investor, client, and business impact.

  • Manage methodology and implementation changes: Evaluate effects on historical results and consuming products, coordinate stakeholder review, and maintain traceability between approved methodologies and production logic.

  • Build shared understanding: Maintain clear calculation documentation and support materials that help global teams explain analytics and resolve client questions.

  • Measure outcomes and communicate progress: Track calculation accuracy, timeliness, coverage, and adoption, while communicating priorities, dependencies, and delivery risks.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in product management, business analysis, or data analysis, preferably within investment analytics, financial data, or financial services.

  • Strong hands-on SQL skills and experience analyzing complex datasets to validate results and investigate issues.

  • Demonstrated ability to translate ambiguous business needs and financial methodologies into precise requirements, calculation logic, and acceptance criteria.

  • Understanding of managed investments, including mutual funds, ETFs, share classes, and concepts such as investment performance, risk, fees, and peer group comparisons.

  • Ability to learn complex financial concepts and methodologies quickly, question assumptions, and apply that understanding to data analysis and calculation requirements.

  • Experience specifying, prototyping, or validating analytical calculations, with close attention to data dependencies, exceptions, and reproducibility.

  • Experience prioritizing requirements or managing a backlog and collaborating with engineering and QA teams throughout the development lifecycle.

  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, including the ability to distinguish data issues from methodology or implementation issues.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex analytical concepts to technical and business audiences.

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively across global teams.

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with investment datasets, financial calculations, or proprietary analytical methodologies.

  • Python or similar programming skills for data analysis, calculation prototyping, and validation.

  • Familiarity with centralized calculation services, APIs, data pipelines, and cloud analytical platforms.

  • Experience with data lineage, reconciliation, and automated calculation quality controls.
