Developer / Data Engineer – AI Platforms (T8–T7)

The Hartford is seeking a Developer / Data Engineer (T8–T7) to join our AI Enablement organization. This role is ideal for early‑ to mid‑career engineers who are excited to build, learn, and contribute to production‑grade AI and data platforms alongside experienced Data Scientists, Engineers, and Technical Leaders .This role is one contributor within a larger ~20‑person team and is not expected to own end‑to‑end platforms. Scope and ownership will scale based on level, experience, and readiness.

Role Scope & Expectations
-This role contributes to well‑defined components within larger AI platforms.
-Ownership is task‑ or component‑level, with increasing autonomy at T7.
-You will work under clear technical guidance, with strong mentorship and code reviews.
-Success is measured by code quality, reliability, learning velocity, and collaboration.

Key Responsibilities
-Data & Platform Development
-Build and maintain data pipelines, APIs, and services that support AI and analytics platforms.
-Write clean, testable, and well‑documented code following team standards.
-Participate in design discussions and implement solutions aligned to established architectures.
-AI & Analytics Enablement (Scoped Contributions)
-Contribute to AI platforms such as:
Synthetic data generation components (Deep Synthetic Foundry)
Text and document processing pipelines (OCR, NLP, IDP)
Image or multimodal data workflows
Implement features, enhancements, or fixes with increasing independence at T7.

Data Engineering Foundations
-Work with SQL and cloud data platforms (e.g., Snowflake) to ingest, transform, and validate data.
-Support data quality checks, performance improvements, and pipeline reliability.
-Learn and apply best practices for monitoring, logging, and operational support.
Collaboration & Growth
-Partner with Data Scientists, Engineers, and Product teams on shared deliverables.
-Participate in sprint planning, code reviews, and retrospectives.
-Actively learn modern tools, frameworks, and AI‑related technologies.

Leveling Expectations
T8 (Mid level)
-Works on clearly scoped tasks with close guidance.
-Learns platform patterns, tooling, and best practices.
-Focuses on correctness, documentation, and growth.

T7 (Senior)
-Owns small components or features end‑to‑end.
-Requires less day‑to‑day guidance and contributes to design discussions.
-Begins mentoring junior contributors and improving existing codebases.

Qualifications
-Required Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, 
Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
-0–4 years of experience (including internships, co‑ops, or academic projects).
-Proficiency in Python or another modern programming language.
-Working knowledge of SQL and data fundamentals.
-Strong problem‑solving skills and eagerness to learn.

Preferred
-Experience with data pipelines, APIs, or cloud platforms.
-Exposure to analytics, ML, or AI systems.
-Familiarity with NLP, document processing, or image data (not required).
-Experience working in collaborative, agile teams.

This role will have a Hybrid work schedule, with the expectation of working in an office (Columbus, OH, Chicago, IL, Hartford, CT or Charlotte, NC) 3 days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.

 

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
