Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop a high-performing search engineering team: Direct activities for a team of search engineers, providing technical guidance, mentorship, and setting performance goals aligned with business objectives
  • Develop and implement advanced search solutions: Lead the development and optimization of search algorithms and systems utilizing technologies such as Elastic/OpenSearch/Solr
  • Fine-tune search relevance: Apply machine learning techniques, including classification and ranking models, to significantly improve the relevance of search results
  • Integrate with modern architectures: Leverage experience with Elastic/Solr/OpenSearch and Kafka to build scalable and resilient search infrastructure
  • Explore and implement cutting-edge technologies: Drive the exploration and integration of Agentic Solutions, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and Large Language Models (LLMs) to enhance search capabilities
  • Analyze search data: Perform and oversee in-depth analysis of search queries, user behavior, and search performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and inform optimization strategies. Collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Partner with product managers, engineers, and business stakeholders to understand search requirements, develop solutions, and deliver impactful results
  • Develop strategic vision: Define and execute long-term technical strategy for search systems, balancing innovation with operational excellence and system reliability
  • Build and scale the team: Hire top search engineering talent, conduct performance reviews, and foster a positive, collaborative work environment that promotes continuous learning and technical excellence
  • Drive operational excellence: Ensure the team adheres to best practices in code review, testing, CI/CD, and production support for search systems

 

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of relevant experience in search engineering, information retrieval, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience managing and leading engineering teams
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience programming using Python, Java, node.js
  • 3+ years experience with Elastic, OpenSearch, Solr or any other open source search engines
  • 3+ years of experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases
  • Strong track record of shipping production-quality search solutions and owning systems through the full lifecycle
  • Proven ability to mentor, grow, and performance-manage engineers at multiple levels
  • Deep understanding of modern software development practices, including code review, testing, CI/CD, and operational excellence
  • Experience with hiring and building engineering teams, including interviewing and evaluating technical candidates
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusivity, psychologically safe and effective team cultures

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated strong ability to communicate technical concepts and implications to business partners and non-technical audiences
  • Proactive in anticipating and preventing problems and roadblocks
  • Strong knowledge of advanced analytics tools and languages for analyzing large datasets from multiple sources
  • Experience with and a strong understanding of Search Technologies and Distributed Systems
  • Background in implementing Agentic Solutions, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and Large Language Models (LLMs)
  • Experience with Kafka and event-driven architectures
  • Platform competence with AWS, GCP and other cloud systems
  • Experience scaling teams or systems through rapid growth and significant architectural transitions
  • Strong ability to build long-term technical vision, drive architectural strategy, and balance short-term execution with long-term sustainability

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (Highschool diploma plus 4 years relevant work experience)

Pay Range

The typical pay range for this role is:

$118,450.00 - $260,590.00


This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls.  The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors.  This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above.  This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
