About Stainless

Stainless is a fast-growing tech startup building the future of APIs. Our customers include industry leaders like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Cloudflare.

We have raised over $35 million from a16z, Sequoia, and founders/C-levels from Stripe, Datadog, Segment, Linear, and more.

We are headquartered in NYC, just west of SoHo, and are a team of ~60 strong expecting to double in the next ~9 to 12 months.

About the Role

We’re looking for a customer-centric engineer to work closely with our clients (OpenAI, Cloudflare, and Anthropic, just to name a few) to build and improve our products, elevate their developer experience, and help them succeed. You’ll engage continuously with our internal engineers and our clients’ developers to help them develop, build, and extend great APIs.

To excel in this role, you’ll bring a combination of technical expertise and a deep love for helping people. You’ll jump into new technical domains and programming languages eager to learn more.

We’re a small team so you’ll get to help lay the foundation of how Stainless grows and evolves both as a product and as a team.

What you’ll do
  • Commit high-quality code both within Stainless and to our customers’ public SDKs.

  • Explain the power and capabilities of Stainless’ products to all customers interacting with Stainless:

    • be on the frontline, answering questions from existing users like Anthropic, OpenAI, Cloudflare and more

    • helping sell to potential users by giving demos of Stainless

    • writing great public documentation showing how to use Stainless

  • Work directly with developers to improve their APIs, SDKs, and technological direction

  • You’ll build internal and external tooling that solves novel and challenging problems.

  • You’ll get to expand your technical knowledge by working at the cutting edge of new developments in programming languages, AI, SDKs and more.

  • Act as the voice of, and advocate for, our customers within the company:

    • This includes working as a partner with product engineers to design and refine what Stainless builds next

    • Forward customer feedback directly to Stainless engineers

  • Work on a deeply experienced, distributed team

Who you are
  • Great attention to detail and craft: trailing commas, undocumented code, flaky tests. You love working to take things from good to great.

  • Experience building context in new technical areas, whether they be new programming languages or paradigms.

  • Experience communicating technical concepts to a range of developers, from the junior to the expert.

  • You love connecting with and helping new users: learning their needs and coming up with creative solutions to solve them

  • You love using and/or crafting a great product. You appreciate and show extreme detail-orientation in articulating paper cuts and finding every possible corner of polish.

Great to haves
  • Polyglot experience. You don’t have to bring this in but you will get to learn a lot at Stainless (we support SDKs in 8 languages and we’re growing!)

  • Experience building and consuming APIs and/or SDKs whether they be REST, GraphQL, gRPC or beyond.

  • Experience building and/or maintaining a popular open-source project

Benefits
  • We offer competitive salary and generous equity grants.

  • Great healthcare coverage options (e.g., fully covered platinum plans).

  • Paid commuter benefits & similar.

  • Paid team lunch/meals during workdays.

  • Flexible PTO plus 3 weeks of company-wide vacation a year (2 weeks in December, 1 week at the end of the summer).

  • Flexible WFH and 1 month fully remote per year ("remote February").
