POSITION TITLE:      Classroom Monitor    

LOCATION/DEPT:     Midwest Corps

REPORTS TO:           Youth Program Coordinator

FLSA CATEGORY:    Non-Exempt

STATUS TYPE:         RPT

PAY GRADE:             202

PAY RANGE:             $17.00 – $20.40

 

OUTCOMES

The Classroom Monitor assists in the Afterschool Program that promotes the vision of the Midwest Corps and the mission of the Salvation Army. The Classroom Monitor works directly with the Youth Program Coordinator in supervising the children of the afterschool program. This is a part-time position requiring evening hours.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Responsible for supervision of children in the afterschool program.
  2. Assist the Youth Program Coordinator and instructors in delivering academic, music, or elective lessons as needed, including helping explain concepts, working with small groups, and supporting classroom management.
  3. Give support, by your actions, to the program concepts of love, understanding and self-worth of each person.
  4. Be accountable for the first aid and safety of afterschool children.
  5. Serve as a model of the Christian life for afterschool children, parents, and surrounding community.
  6. Provide afterschool children with a safe, fun, and wholesome environment that is conducive to growth and a positive experience.
  7. Organize storage areas and control use of materials, equipment, and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.
  8. Required to attend all staff meetings of the Afterschool Program.
  9. Must complete required trainings to include Safe-From-Harm certified within 30 days of hire.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports directly to the Youth Program Coordinator and carry out responsibilities within established policies and guidelines.

This individual relates to and interacts with a wide range of contacts both within and outside the Salvation Army. In these contacts they act as a representative of the Army and its mission.

 

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as timeliness, accuracy, and the completeness of assigned goals.

A 30, 60, and 90-day performance review will be conducted. 

 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or G.E.D. is required.
  • Two years of college education is a plus but not required.
  • One to two years of experience working with children is a plus but not required.
  • A background in childcare or working towards a degree in education is a plus.
  • Experience in the operation of a faith-based organization is a plus.
  • A valid driver’s license and clearance of The Salvation Army’s MVR process.

POSITION LIMITATIONS

This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.

This individual will keep the Youth Program Coordinator informed of all critical issues relating to his/her area of responsibility.

This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position is required to do light to moderate physical work.  Must be able to lift and carry 40 lbs.
  • In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use standard office equipment and a PC or for executing educational programs.
  • The work environment for this position includes high levels of noise and flexibility in a constant changing environment. 
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors.  This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a positive manner; courteous treatment of staff, clients, and visitors; respect of others’ property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors, and subordinates.  Support the Mission of The Salvation Army by treating every donor, contact and colleague with respect and dignity, and without discrimination of any kind.
