About the Department

The Data Science Institute at the University of Chicago was established to support the development of emerging efforts in data science across the University. The staff in the Data Science Institute support the University’s community of scholars, their shared ideals, and the core values that make the University a singular intellectual destination. Together with the University's deans and department chairs, the Data Science Institute provides the opportunities, infrastructure, and resources that encourage our faculty and other scholars to pursue their finest work. We are part of the Physical Sciences Division which includes departments and several interdisciplinary research institutes and centers.


Job Summary

The University of Chicago Data Science Institute is looking for an outstanding candidate to contribute to the success of the Data Science Clinic and Technical Research Team. Aimed at candidates whose passion lies in developing innovative data science and AI solutions to real-world problems, this position offers the opportunity to work on projects in partnership with social impact organizations, government, industry and research groups.
The Data Science Clinic and Technical Research Team work hand in hand on data science and AI projects across research, application development and instruction. This position will work closely with these teams and the external project partners. Successful candidates will be assisting in all aspects of project and partnership management, this includes developing strategy, budget tracking as well as other general administrative tasks including scheduling and event coordination.
This position is ideal for people interested in the intersection of data science and AI and social impact work. From directly executing projects for nonprofits to capacity building with training-focused activities, this position will have an important effect on the direction and execution of our work.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the day-to-day execution of the Data Science Clinic program.
  • Recruits and retains partner organizations for projects to meet demands based on clinic and Technical Research Team needs in collaboration with the Director of Clinic, Senior Director of Partnerships, Data & Engineering Manager, and Director of Corporate Partnerships.
  • Communicates and builds professional relationships with corporate, nonprofit, and community partners.
  • Discusses clinic options with students, provides counsel and/or mediates to resolve difficulties or disputes when necessary, and promotes student learning and encourages their professional development.
  • Provides information to organizations participating in the clinic or engagements with the Technical Research Team, helping to scope viable data science and AI project proposals as well as facilitate student learning and evaluation.
  • Conducts site visits, as well as telephone/video-based conference calls, with project organization representatives.
  • Collaborates closely with the Data Science Institute and university staff on clinic-related processes, including legal agreements.
  • Assists with grant applications and related reporting.
  • Analyzes program budgets and recommends or makes budgetary recommendations.
  • Has moderate/high levels of interactions with faculty, researchers and staff for committee work or information.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
