At Cengage, our employees have a direct impact in helping learners around the world discover the power and joy of learning. We are bonded by our shared purpose – driving innovation that helps millions of learners improve their lives and achieve their dreams through education.

What Makes This Opportunity Unique

As the Director Web Experience Design, you will shape the vision and design strategy for Cengage’s web ecosystem, creating modern, compelling experiences that connect customers with our products, services, and learning experiences.

Lead and mentor a dedicated design team, setting a high bar for experience quality, visual craft, and measurable impact. Grounded in customer understanding, behavioral data, experimentation, and business insights, drive continuous improvement across discovery, engagement, ecommerce, and conversion—reducing friction, testing new ideas, and creating differentiated experiences that deliver value for customers and the business.

Job Responsibilities

As the Director, Web Experience Design, you will:

  • Set the vision for Cengage’s web experience, establishing a clear UX/UI strategy for how our websites help customers discover, understand, evaluate, purchase, and engage with Cengage products and services.

  • Make experimentation central to how we design, partnering with Product, Marketing, Analytics, and Engineering to develop hypotheses, rapidly prototype ideas, run A/B and multivariate tests.

  • Advance ecommerce and conversion experiences, continually improving and other high-value conversion moments.

  • Design across the full customer journey, creating coherent experiences across acquisition, exploration, consideration, purchase, onboarding, and engagement.

  • Use data to identify and prioritize opportunities, combining qualitative research with behavioral analytics, funnel performance, experimentation results, conversion metrics, and other signals.

  • Build a culture of continuous optimization, moving beyond one-time redesigns toward an iterative model in which experiences are continually measured, tested, learned from, and improved.

  • Stay ahead of evolving web and design practices, including AI-enabled experiences, personalization, emerging interaction patterns, ecommerce innovation, experimentation methods, accessibility, and new design and development technologies.

  • Develop outstanding talent by coaching and mentoring designers, strengthening UX and UI craft, building commercial and analytical fluency, developing future design leaders, and creating an environment where teams can do their best work.

Requirements

To be considered for this role, you have:

  • Proven experience in a senior Web Experience Design role, including 3+ years of people management experience leading and developing high-performing design teams.

  • Strong experience with ecommerce, growth, conversion optimization, or other transactional digital experiences, with an understanding of how design influences customer behavior and business performance.

  • Deep expertise in UX and UI design principles, human-centered design methodologies, interaction and visual design, information architecture, accessibility, responsive design, research-informed practices, and modern digital design processes.

  • Exceptional collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to influence senior leaders, align cross-functional teams, articulate a compelling experience vision, and connect design decisions to customer and business outcomes.

  • A portfolio is required to be considered for this position.
