Smithbucklin, a 650-person, employee-owned professional services company with more than 70 years of success serving the association market, with primary offices in Chicago and Washington, D.C., is looking for a Membership & Operations Sr. Coordinator to join our Healthcare & Scientific Industry Practice team in our Chicago office.

The Society of Interventional Oncology (SIO) is a global medical society dedicated to advancing the field of interventional oncology through education, research, collaboration, and innovation. SIO brings together physicians and other healthcare professionals from across disciplines to advance evidence-based, image-guided cancer care and improve outcomes for patients worldwide.

The Healthcare & Scientific unit offers unmatched association expertise and specific knowledge of the issues, challenges and actions distinctive to the changing healthcare environment. Our association professionals bring extensive experience and considerable knowledge of the issues unique to healthcare-related associations. The Membership & Operations Sr. Coordinator plays a significant role in the management of our client associations' programs and supports the association Executive Director in all areas of association management.

What You Will Do:

Strategic Leadership and Program Management

  • Lead the strategic planning, development, execution, and evaluation of assigned SIO programs and initiatives, ensuring alignment with organizational priorities and long-term goals.
  • Serve as the primary staff liaison and strategic leader to assigned strategic committees, task forces, and working groups, partnering with volunteer leadership to establish priorities, advance initiatives, and deliver measurable outcomes. Translate Membership Committee priorities into actionable plans, measurable goals, and initiatives that enhance the member experience and demonstrate the value of SIO membership.
  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for year-round programs, meetings, and special initiatives, overseeing program development, financial performance, execution, and continuous improvement.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen program effectiveness, expand organizational impact, and improve operational processes through data-informed recommendations and proactive problem-solving.
  • Collaborate across functional teams to align resources, manage competing priorities, and ensure successful delivery of organizational commitments.

Financial Management and Accountability

  • Develop, manage, and monitor budgets for assigned programs and initiatives, maintaining accountability for financial performance and responsible resource allocation.
  • Lead financial planning and forecasting activities, including revenue projections, expense management, budget variance analysis, and identification of financial risks and opportunities.
  • Evaluate program financial performance and recommend strategies to improve sustainability, operational efficiency, and return on investment.
  • Partner with organizational leadership and finance teams to support annual budgeting, financial reporting, and long-term program planning.

People Management and Team Leadership

  • Provide direct supervision, coaching, and performance management for up to two staff members, fostering accountability, professional development, and a collaborative team environment.
  • Establish clear expectations, delegate responsibilities effectively, and oversee staff workloads to ensure timely delivery of high-quality work.
  • Support staff development through regular feedback, mentoring, and identification of opportunities to strengthen skills and increase ownership of responsibilities.
  • Model effective communication, sound judgment, and a solutions-oriented approach to managing challenges and competing priorities.

Volunteer Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and sustain trusted relationships with SIO leadership, physician volunteers, members, industry partners, and other key stakeholders.
  • Guide committee leadership in translating strategic discussions into actionable work plans, clear deliverables, and measurable progress.
  • Anticipate organizational and stakeholder needs, proactively address challenges, and provide thoughtful recommendations to support effective decision-making.
  • Represent SIO professionally in meetings, educational programs, and stakeholder discussions, exercising independent judgment and appropriate decision-making authority

  • The ability to travel 10-15%

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year institution or equivalent experience
  • 4-6 years of relevant professional experience, to include direct supervisory experience
  • Experience managing and supporting volunteer committees, boards, or other leadership groups, preferably within a medical specialty society or professional association.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budget development, forecasting, financial analysis, and revenue and expense oversight.
  • Prior experience supervising, coaching, and developing staff, with demonstrated ability to delegate effectively and foster accountability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working within healthcare, medical specialty societies, or other mission-driven professional organizations preferred.
  • Experience working with volunteers is valuable
  • Previous experience in budget management and forecasting
  • Database management experience and website editing skills are a plus
  • Proficiency with basic computer programming, including the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • HTML experience

Smithbucklin is a hybrid work environment with in-office days established as Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.  Employees will work a standard 40-hour week, with the possibility of additional hours based on project deadlines.
 
Smithbucklin considers several factors when determining compensation, including a candidate's recent coursework, training, experience, and certifications, among other considerations. The expected pay for this role is $69,000-$75,000.
