The AVP Construction Industry Leader - West has overall responsibility to lead the Western territory for Construction segment to achieve the planned financial outcome. This leader will have demonstrated executive presence and brand in Construction, specifically within the Top 6 distribution firms who control Construction revenue. The AVP will strategically develop campaigns that cut across multiple disciplines and multiple products to package a seamless proposition that will resonate with Construction specific brokers and customers. They have accountability for defining segment space and target appetite and capacity to serve this segment within the west territory. Other duties include:
- Ownership to develop, innovate and define value propositions that will be reflective of the territory.
- Develops, leads and executes strategies that optimizes profit growth and appropriate rate/account retention .
- Leads the team with regard to research and development of competitive intelligence. For example, emerging Technology, emerging Construction sectors, and how they may be a change advocate by uniquely understanding the exposures.
- Stays current with economic factors affecting the industry and makes strategic adjustments as appropriate.
- Leads and executes profit improvement measures as needed.
- Interfaces with and provides direction with Shared Service and Support units to deliver value across the supply chain.
- Ensure the appropriate pricing and analytics are in place that optimizes the profitability of the segment.
- Experience working with loss sensitive programs structures including deductible, retro and captive insurance programs.
- Develop and maintain relationships with Global and National Construction brokers.
- Takes ownership of client relationship management for significant customers.
- Actively engaged in the Construction and Insurance Industry with thought leadership driving visibility and market presence.
- Develop industry and technical expertise with field underwriters.
- Identify and develop broker relationships with significant market share in Construction.
- Monitor specific industry related competitor activity and competitive landscape to ensure real time differentiation of the CNA Construction value proposition.
Job Summary
Officer position responsible for providing overall underwriting excellence through management for an industry. Ensures effective management and implementation of strategic objectives and policies for an industry segment in accordance with the company's strategic plans.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Performs a combination of duties in accordance with departmental guidelines:
- Implements strategic objectives underwriting strategies and best practices with substantial impact on the short-term success of an industry segment.
- Ensures the achievement of continued profitability growth and/or operational efficiencies for an industry segment through assessment of risk tolerance market appetite and emerging risk issues.
- Evaluates underwriting performance based on financial analysis. Includes rate reserve adequacy operational planning and product reviews. Provides results to members of the underwriting management team and develops plans to resolve issues.
- Monitors the usage and profitability of alternative pricing programs.
- Drives adherence to underwriting authority delegation audit criteria and catastrophe management for an industry segment.
- Collaborates with business partners in Risk Control Actuarial Claim Worldwide Operations and Compliance to address governance and compliance issues related to underwriting practices.
- Provides guidance and direction in the development of underwriting and training tools.
- May lead direct and have full management accountability for staff in area of responsibility with an emphasis on talent management and succession planning in accordance with strategic direction.
- May take lead responsibility for the development of underwriting strategies and position papers for emerging issues when assigned.
- May maintain relationships with branches brokers agents and customers to assess risk tolerance market appetite and emerging issues.
May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills Knowledge and Abilities
- In-depth technical knowledge of underwriting theories and practices within the insurance field.
- Ability to effectively interact and communicate with all levels of external and/or internal business partners within scope of responsibility team and/or matrix environment.
- Leadership and management skills demonstrating integrity and professionalism.
- Ability to drive results by identifying and resolving problems within scope of responsibility.
- Knowledge of the insurance industry its products and services.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree with Master's preferred in a related discipline or equivalent.
- Typically a minimum of 10 years of related work experience with five years management experience. 3. Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) roles.
