The Opportunity
This role owns the technical architecture and hands-on execution of CentralSquare's NG911 network deployments — durably and long-term. It is a deep, principal-level individual-contributor role for someone who designs end-to-end and stays in the build. The Principal Architect partners with the NG911 Product Manager, who owns roadmap, prioritization, and product direction; this role owns the how — the architecture, the implementation, and the standards that make deployments repeatable and reliable. It is the internal and external technical authority for NG911 network architecture.
Key Responsibilities
1. NG911 Architecture Design & Ownership
- Design and own end-to-end NG911 network architectures aligned to NENA i3 standards, ESInet integration, and state-level requirements
- Define architectures for SIP/VoIP call routing, redundancy, failover, and high availability (targeting 99.999% uptime)
- Develop scalable patterns for PSAP-to-cloud connectivity, including VPN, AWS Transit Gateway, and Direct Connect
- Ensure architectures support integrated NG911 services (voice, text-to-911, ALI/location data, video)
2. Cloud Network Engineering (AWS)
- Design and implement AWS-based network architectures (VPCs, Transit Gateway, NLB, WAF, VPN, Direct Connect)
- Build and maintain hybrid network topologies connecting PSAPs, ESInet providers, and cloud infrastructure
- Ensure resiliency across multi-AZ and multi-region deployments
- Define and enforce Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) standards for repeatable deployments
3. Telephony & SIP Infrastructure
- Architect and support telephony platforms (SIP trunks, SBCs, media gateways, and PBX layers)
- Ensure proper integration between ESInet SIP trunks, PSAP phones/workstations, and cloud-hosted PBX layers
- Design call routing flows, failover models, and redundancy patterns
- Support migration paths from legacy (TDM/PRI/analog) to SIP-based NG911 architectures
4. Implementation & Deployment Leadership
- Personally lead hands-on deployment of network architectures for the most complex and highest-risk PSAP environments
- Build and continuously refine the deployment runbooks, playbooks, and standards that enable Cloud, Services, and Support to execute routine go-lives without this role in the loop — eliminating single-person dependency for a five-nines service
- Coordinate across customer IT teams, ESInet providers, and cloud engineering
- Validate connectivity (TGW/VPN), SIP call flows, and end-to-end call-handling readiness prior to go-live
5. Reliability, Performance & Compliance
- Design for and enforce 99.999% availability (five nines) and sub-150ms latency for real-time communications
- Implement network security aligned to CJIS, NIST, and CISA frameworks
- Ensure compliance with state NG911 mandates and ESInet requirements
- Own (or design out) the incident-response and on-call posture required to sustain five-nines
6. Vendor & Partner Management
- Evaluate, integrate, and manage last-mile and connectivity partners (e.g., ESInet providers, PEAKE, Dejero) against architecture, reliability, and cost requirements
- Serve as the technical point of contact in partner architecture and integration discussions
7. Cross-Functional Leadership & Customer Engagement
- Serve as the technical authority for NG911 network architecture internally and externally
- Lead technical discussions with state 911 agencies, ESInet providers, and strategic partners
- Translate operational PSAP requirements into clear technical architecture designs
- Partner with the NG911 Product Manager to turn roadmap and priorities into executable architecture
What This Role Is Measured On
- Go-lives delivered on date with validated connectivity and call routing
- Sustained reliability against five-nines and latency targets across the PSAP fleet
- Reduction in deployment cycle time and go-live risk
- Deployment standards and runbooks adopted and used by Cloud, Services, and Support
- Architectures that scale across dozens of PSAPs without redesign
Required Qualifications
Technical Expertise
- 10+ years in network engineering, architecture, or telecom infrastructure, including principal/lead-level scope
- Hard requirements: hands-on AWS network architecture in production and deep SIP/VoIP/telephony (SBC, media gateways, call routing)
- Strong IP networking foundation (routing, switching, VPNs, QoS)
- Proven experience with high-availability, mission-critical systems
NG911 / Domain Knowledge (deep expertise preferred; demonstrable ability to ramp acceptable for an otherwise strong AWS+SIP candidate)
- NG911 architecture and ESInet environments
- NENA i3 standards and SIP-based call routing
- Familiarity with public safety systems (CAD, ALI, 911 call handling) preferred
Certifications (Preferred)
- AWS Certified Advanced Networking – Specialty (or AWS Solutions Architect)
- CCNP or CCIE (or equivalent)
- NENA ENP (domain credibility)
- Working knowledge of CJIS, NIST, and related compliance frameworks
Key Skills & Traits
- Strong system-level thinking across network + cloud + telephony integration
- Owns both design and hands-on execution, durably — this is not a step toward management
- Credible across the table from state 911 directors and ESInet partners
- Operates calmly in high-stakes, mission-critical environments
- Excellent communication with both technical teams and public safety stakeholders
CJIS Clearance
A required part of the onboarding process for this role involves obtaining CJIS (Criminal Justice Information Services) clearance—a critical credential for safeguarding public safety data. At CentralSquare, we’ll stand with you every step of the way to secure this clearance should you be selected for hire. As part of the process, a comprehensive background check will be conducted, and please note that U.S. citizenship or permanent residency is generally required to obtain CJIS clearance.
