What you'll be doing

CIBC is seeking a highly skilled Communications Director with an extensive and proven track record of partnering with C-suite executives providing counsel, strategy and execution support on high-impact communications. This role translates business priorities into clear, compelling narratives that engage employees, reinforce strategy, and protect and enhance reputation. This role is ideal for a seasoned communications professional who excels in high-stakes environments and understands the nuances of executive messaging, reputation management, and stakeholder engagement. The successful candidate operates comfortably at both the strategic and hands-on levels, supporting executive communications and enterprise priorities.  

At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. You’ll have the flexibility to manage your work activities within a hybrid work arrangement where you’ll spend 1-3 days per week on-site, while other days will be remote.

How you'll succeed

  • Strategic Counsel: Serve as a trusted advisor to C-suite leaders, providing guidance on communication strategies that align with business objectives and enhance executive visibility. They will also advise on messaging, tone, timing and stakeholder impact.

  • Message Development:  Draft and shape executive communications including speeches, talking points, presentations, leader emails, town halls, and video scripts. They will partner with leaders to sharpen their voice, presence, and narrative consistency.  

  • Reputation Management: Proactively manage executive profiles and reputations through thoughtful messaging, civic engagement and strategic positioning. 

  • Stakeholder Engagement: Develop and execute communication plans that effectively reach and influence key stakeholders, including clients, employees, media, and investors

  • Issues Management: Provide expert support in navigating sensitive issues, crisis communications, and change management initiatives. 

  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure consistent messaging and alignment across all channels. 

  • Measurement and Continuous Improvement: Evaluate communications effectiveness using qualitative and quantitative feedback. Apply insights to refine messaging, channels and approaches. 

Who you are

  • Extensive Experience: Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in corporate communications, with a significant portion spent advising leaders 

  • Executive Presence: Demonstrated ability to interact confidently and discreetly with senior leaders and confidence to challenge constructively. 

  • Exceptional Writing Skills: Mastery in developing clear, persuasive, and impactful executive communications. 

  • Strategic Thinking: Strong business acumen and the ability to translate complex concepts into accessible messages. 

  • Media Savvy: Experience in media relations, crisis communication, and reputation management. 

  • Adaptability: Proven success in fast-paced, dynamic environments with shifting priorities. 

  • Collaborative: Highly collaborative and relationship oriented.

At CIBC, we offer a competitive total rewards package. This role has an expected salary range of $150,000 - $195,000K for the Chicago, IL market based on experience, qualifications, and location of the position. The successful candidate may be eligible to participate in the relevant business unit’s incentive compensation plan, which may also include a discretionary bonus component.
