Operating Engineer – JLL

What this job involves: As an Operating Engineer with JLL in downtown Chicago, you will play a critical role in maintaining safe, efficient, and reliable building operations across key facility systems. This position is responsible for operating, troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and life safety systems to support an exceptional occupant experience. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise in at least one core trade area while demonstrating the flexibility and problem-solving skills needed to support a wide range of building operations. This role is well-suited for a hands-on professional who values safety, operational excellence, and delivering high-quality service in a dynamic commercial environment.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and repair building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire life safety, and related mechanical equipment.

  • Perform preventative maintenance and routine inspections to ensure equipment reliability and optimal system performance.

  • Troubleshoot operational issues, identify root causes, and complete repairs in a safe and timely manner.

  • Record equipment readings, make operational adjustments, and maintain accurate maintenance documentation.

  • Support emergency response activities including fire alarms, hazardous conditions, and other building-related incidents.

  • Maintain compliance with all safety procedures, environmental regulations, and hazardous material handling requirements.

  • Coordinate with outside contractors, monitor service quality, and assist with resolving recurring operational concerns and tenant service requests.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or state equivalent required.

  • Minimum of two years of college coursework, technical school, or related trade education.

  • Minimum of four years of experience in an electrician, HVAC/refrigeration, or related skilled trade field.

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license with a clean driving record.

  • Strong working knowledge of building systems, maintenance practices, and safety procedures.

  • Ability to work with computer applications including Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Ability to safely lift up to 80 lbs., climb ladders up to 30 feet, and work at heights as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in commercial office, campus, or large-scale facility environments.

  • Multi-skilled technical experience across HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.

  • Familiarity with building automation systems and computer-controlled equipment.

  • Knowledge of energy-efficient building operations and preventative maintenance practices.

  • Strong customer service and communication skills when responding to tenant and client requests.

  • Experience supporting emergency response procedures and incident investigations.

  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and maintaining a clean, organized work environment.

Location: Chicago, Illinois

Work Shift: Based on operational needs; flexibility for evenings, weekends, and emergency response may be required.

Salary: $29.23 - $42.30

This position does not provide visa sponsorship. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Estimated compensation for this position:

60,800.00 – 88,000.00 USD per year

This range is an estimate and actual compensation may differ. Final compensation packages are determined by various considerations including but not limited to candidate qualifications, location, market conditions, and internal considerations.
