Sompo has a unique opportunity for a Sr. Claims Counsel for our Professional Liability Claims team.

This position will complement the existing professional liability claims team that supports the U.S Sompo Financial Lines business unit. The successful candidate will be able to provide insight and analysis on complex high profile/high exposure Professional Lines/E & O and/or Lawyers Professional Liability claims.

Location: This position will be based out of our New York, NY, Purchase, NY, Garden City, NY, Morristown, NJ, Alpharetta, GA, Charlotte, NC or Chicago, IL office locations. What you’ll be doing:

  • Manage complex Professional Liability claims (Miscellaneous Professional Liability or Lawyers Professional Liability) from inception to resolution, including coverage, liability, and damages analysis.

  • Identify exposures and claim trends affecting the portfolio and provide written assessments to the SompoPro business unit.

  • Address coverage questions, resolve issues, and support the SompoPro underwriting team and senior management, including drafting Professional Lines policies.

  • Represent the company at client meetings, mediations, external events, and industry conferences, potentially as a speaker or presenter.

  • Collaborate with the Global Sompo Claims Team on various projects, including publishing on claim trends and assisting other offices with complex claims.

  • Communicate effectively with underwriting and other functional groups, perform additional duties as required by management, and travel as necessary.

What you’ll bring:

  • Minimum 3-7 years of E&O claims handling experience, preferably with increasing responsibility at an insurance company and/or law firm; Juris Doctor degree required.

  • Proven ability to handle complex professional liability claims, including insurance agent/broker, real property management, and miscellaneous professional lines claims, both primary and excess.

  • Strong analytical, decision-making, negotiating, and organizational skills, with attention to detail and a commitment to superior client service.

  • Excellent presentation, verbal, and written communication skills, with the ability to provide writing samples as needed.

  • Ability to establish strong working relationships with underwriting, actuarial, and legal teams.

  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and claims systems such as Guidewire, Genius, and ImageRight.

  • Occasional travel may be required for conferences and offsite meetings.

Salary Range: $125,000 – $175,000. Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
