ABOUT THE JOB

The Senior Platform Engineer designs, builds, and owns the core cloud infrastructure platforms, standards, and guardrails that enable Marathon’s engineering teams to safely deliver software at scale. This role operates with a platform-as-a-product mindset, focusing on automation, infrastructure-as-code, reliability-by-design, and self-service enablement rather than ticket-driven operations. This role works closely with platform leadership and principal architects to design platform direction and enable engineering teams.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, implement, and maintain core cloud platform capabilities, primarily in AWS, including networking, containers, compute, storage, identity, and security foundations.
  • Build and manage reusable infrastructure primitives (e.g., storage, compute, networking patterns) as standardized, documented platform components.
  • Implement and enforce Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) using Terraform (or equivalent) as the default for all infrastructure provisioning and change management.
  • Define and maintain platform standards, reference architectures, and approved implementation patterns.
  • Design infrastructure for reliability-by-design, including immutability, automation, ephemerality, recovery patterns, and clearly defined failure domains.
  • Develop automation and self-service capabilities that enable application teams to safely consume infrastructure without direct platform intervention.
  • Partner with Security to ensure platform designs meet SOC2, HIPAA, HITRUST, and future compliance requirements by default through guardrails and policy-based controls.
  • Embed security, reliability, and cost-awareness early in CI/CD and deployment workflows (“shift-left”).
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering and operations teams to reduce incidents through improved platform design rather than reactive response.
  • Mentor and support other engineers by sharing patterns, best practices, and technical guidance.
  • Maintains holistic ownership of platform standards, ensuring consistency, integration, and standards across all platform domains.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or Information Technology and a minimum of 5 years’ experience in cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, or DevOps-focused roles, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Hands-on experience operating AWS in production environments.
  • Strong experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform preferred).
  • Strong automation and scripting skills (e.g., Python, PowerShell, Bash).
  • Strong experience with collaborative development tools (e.g. Git, GitHub).
  • Experience with CI/CD tooling (e.g. GitHub Actions, Octopus Deploy)
  • Experience designing secure, scalable systems rather than manually operating them.

DESIRED ATTRIBUTES

  • Platform-oriented mindset focused on leverage and durability.
  • Strong ownership and accountability for outcomes.
  • Enablement-first approach to system design with regards to security & reliability as default systems attributes.
  • Bias toward automation and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to influence technical direction without formal authority.
  • Knowledge of cloud-native infrastructure best practices and design.

Pay Range: $115,000 - $140,000/yr
