Chicago has a long history in technology. The city is the birthplace of inventions of industry like the refrigerated rail car and was even the site of the first self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction. 

Today, Chicago can boast of other achievements in tech — like being the city with the highest number of woman-owned startups and the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce reporting that the tech sector employs over a 106,000 people in the city. 

We’ve put together a list of some of the top Chicago tech companies bringing on new talent, adding to the city’s tech legacy. These businesses are hiring software engineers in the City of Big Shoulders.

Chicago Companies Hiring Software Engineers

OppFi is a mission-driven finance platform that expands credit to Americans who might not otherwise have access to it. The company was listed by Forbes for being one of the top startup employers in 2021. The company is looking to add to its senior software engineering team, where a new hire can expect to develop front-end and back-end services that are used across the entire tech suite. 

 

Grainger is a B2B supplier of maintenance, repair and operating supplies. The company has over 26,000 employees, and was recently noted by Glassdoor and Fortune as a Best Place to Work and best place to work for women, respectively. Software engineers at Grainger use React and Next.js on front-end work and Java for back-end work.  

 

Cisco Meraki is a cloud-managed IT company that offers customers things like Wi-Fi, routing and security services. Some software engineers at Cisco Meraki focus on firmware and the security side of the business, while also becoming more familiar with the Cisco Meraki codebase. 

 

Tempus is a data and artificial intelligence company that focuses on healthcare. The company claims to be home to one of the largest clinical and molecular data libraries, which would be a key part of a software engineer’s role. An addition to the development team could expect to work on cloud-based applications that process Tempus’ trove of data. 

 

Caterpillar Inc. is the construction and mining equipment manufacturer that’s also a household name. Its digital arm, Cat Digital, brings advanced technology to the company’s famous “yellow iron.” The company’s downtown Chicago office is in the Loop, just four blocks from Millennium Park. Additions to the team will help manage the ongoing operations of the company’s cloud environment. 

 

Enfusion is a SaaS Fintech company that allows the buy-side marketplace to monitor risk, manage workflows and make investment decisions for clients. It says it has plans to scale its presence throughout the next three to five years with heavy hiring throughout the U.S. The company is headquartered in the Loop. 

 

EDGE offers its data and analytics platform to financial institutions, lenders and stakeholders. It uses bank transaction data in an attempt to assess consumer credit risk in a less biased manner. The company has plans to hire a software engineer to work on-site at its Chicago office, as of the end of 2024.  

 

CDW is a global IT solutions provider headquartered in Vernon Hills with an office in downtown Chicago. It specializes in helping organizations optimize their digital workspaces and address challenges through expertise in cybersecurity, hybrid infrastructure and data management. In addition to tailored solutions, CDW offers a wide selection of hardware and software products, including computers, phones, printers and other electronics. The company says it’s always on the lookout for talented software engineers to join its team. 

 

Fintech company Enova operates a portfolio of tech-enabled businesses that aim to make credit accessible to both businesses and consumers. Enova boasts a work culture that prioritizes inclusion and professional advancement, and it offers both full-time jobs and internship opportunities for software engineers.

 

PartySlate has its headquarters in Chicago, near the Merchandise Mart, with plans to hire software engineers for hybrid or remote roles. The digital platform connects those planning events with the vendors, venues and professionals that can make it possible.
