The US Foods Summer Internship Program provides a forum for students to apply classroom skills and academic training in a real-world business environment. In addition to being assigned business-impacting projects throughout the summer, students will be matched with a manager who will meet with them on a regular basis to provide direction on assignments as well as deliver performance feedback and a mentor who will be available to offer day-to-day guidance and support.
Interns will also get exposure to US Foods executive leadership; have an opportunity to participate in learning and social events with other interns across business functions and have an opportunity to deliver an end of summer presentation to showcase their accomplishments with key business leaders.
US Foods internships are full-time paid positions (40 hours per week from June - August) with the possibility of transitioning to a full-time position post-graduation dependent on availability and overall performance.
This position has been segmented as Hybrid meaning the work is a combination of onsite and remote.
Please note: We are unable to provide internships to students that require sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., OPT, F-1, H-1B or any other visa status) now or in the future.
[For Rosemont based internships only] Local candidates are encouraged to apply. For qualified students whose permanent home of record is located outside 50 miles from US Foods Corporate HQ, a sign-on bonus will be offered to partially offset housing costs for the summer.

BASIC PURPOSE:

The AI Automation Intern identifies and evaluates opportunities to apply agentic AI and automation across business processes. The role works directly with business stakeholders to understand workflows, pain points, manual activities, and decision points; translate them into potential AI-enabled solutions; and help build, test, document, and demonstrate proofs of concept. The focus is improving end-to-end business processes—not providing administrative or operational support to the Enterprise Platforms team.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Partner with business stakeholders to document current-state processes, pain points, handoffs, manual work, and decision requirements.
  • Identify and prioritize business-process opportunities where agentic AI, copilots, workflow automation, or intelligent agents could improve speed, quality, cost, control, or associate experience.
  • Translate business needs into clear use cases, requirements, process flows, prompts, agent instructions, and success measures.
  • Build and test proofs of concept using approved AI and automation tools.
  • Evaluate agent outputs for accuracy, reliability, usability, and alignment with business requirements.
  • Document data sources, integrations, controls, human-review points, risks, assumptions, and dependencies.
  • Work with business, technology, data, security, legal, and governance partners to validate solution feasibility and responsible AI requirements.
  • Develop business cases that describe expected benefits, implementation effort, process impact, and measures of success.
  • Prepare demonstrations, findings, recommendations, and implementation roadmaps for business and technology leaders.
  • Capture reusable patterns, lessons learned, and documentation that can support future agentic AI opportunities.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in business, operations, information systems, computer science, engineering, data analytics, or a related field.
  • Must be enrolled in school during the internship.
  • Typically, students between their junior and senior years or between their first and second years of graduate school will be considered.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written communication, and process-documentation skills.
  • Ability to work with business stakeholders to understand workflows and translate business problems into structured requirements.
  • Basic understanding of AI, automation, data, or software concepts.
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams, learn new tools quickly, and communicate findings clearly.

PREFFERED SKILLS:

  • Exposure to generative AI, agentic AI, copilots, prompt engineering, workflow automation, or low-code development.
  • Experience with Microsoft Copilot, Copilot Studio, Power Platform, Power Automate, SharePoint, Teams, or similar tools.
  • Familiarity with process mapping, requirements gathering, business analysis, Lean, or continuous-improvement methods.
  • Experience analyzing data, developing business cases, or defining measurable outcomes.
  • Understanding of responsible AI concepts, including data privacy, security, governance, accuracy, and human oversight.
  • Ability to create clear process flows, demonstrations, presentations, and technical or business documentation.
  • Curiosity about how AI can redesign end-to-end business processes rather than simply automate individual tasks.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have readily available access to high-speed internet
  • Must have regular, reliable method of transportation to commute to US Foods’ location

RELATIONSHIPS INTERNAL/EXTERNAL MAY INCLUDE:

  • Internal: Core Team, Internal Business Clients
  • External: Vendors
