About the Department

The University of Chicago biomedical enterprise houses three entities: the Biological Sciences Division (BSD), the University of Chicago Medicine (UCM), and the Pritzker School of Medicine. Collectively called UCM, we are one of the nation's leading academic medical institutions and have been at the forefront of discovery, education, and clinical care since 1927. The BSD is the largest academic unit within the University. The BSD is comprised of faculty from ten basic science departments, 13 clinical departments, and several Centers and Institutes. Job Summary

The job uses best practices and knowledge to develop new and existing systems. Solves problems and anticipates evolving business requirements to identify, design, and implement appropriate process improvements, systems alternatives, and/or enhancements to current systems.
The Business Systems Analyst 3 designs, develops, and manages analytical solutions to support operational and strategic decision-making. This role performs data analysis, reporting, and workflow evaluation, ensuring data integrity and system reliability. The analyst serves as a liaison between IT and business units, serving as a project manager on system upgrades, enhancements, testing, and end-user support.

Responsibilities

  • Leads medium sized teams for medium duration projects (up to 8 months) and/or system support and optimization.

  • Directs and maintains communication with all team members to ensure conformance with requirements of each project and user expectations. 

  • Directs and monitors the activities of team members.  Provides input for peer reviews.

  • Authors and reviews policies and procedures, technical and/or support documentation. 

  • Develops collaborative and productive relationships with customer base. 

  • Leads design and validation sessions to determine system requirements and review development.

  • Identifies and pursues opportunities for process improvements.

  • Has a deep understanding of business process analyses, needs assessments, and preliminary cost/benefit analyses. Solves complex problems relating to computer equipment capacity, limitations, and operation time.

  • Utilizes thorough understanding of business systems and industry requirements to translate business and user needs into system requirement specifications.

  • Recommends process improvements in existing applications and revises existing system logic difficulties as necessary. Designs, develops, and implements new applications, systems architecture, network systems, and applications infrastructures.

  • Communicates and presents on system enhancements and/or alternatives to colleagues in IT management.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.


Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Business, or related field.

Experience:

  • 5 years professional experience, including at least 3 years with Epic PB (reporting, extracts, security, charge router, workqueue setup).

  • Experience acting as a liaison between IT and business units, supporting upgrades, enhancements, and workflow improvements.

Preferred Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of revenue cycle operations and Epic PB systems (reporting, extracts, charge router, workqueue setup).

  • Proficiency in SQL, data querying, reporting tools (Power BI, Crystal Reports, or similar), and basic scripting.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication; ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical staff.

  • Analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

  • Ability to manage projects and priorities independently, while collaborating in cross-functional teams.

  • Commitment to confidentiality and handling sensitive University information responsibly.

  • Epic Resolute Professional Billing expertise.

  • SQL and experience with data querying and reporting.

  • Familiarity with data migration, data integrity, and system testing.

  • Understanding of system integration, client/server applications, and full development lifecycle strongly preferred.
