Tips on Keeping Your Eyes Safe in the Workplace

It’s no surprise that a vast majority of jobs today require employees to spend most of their time in front of a computer screen. As technology progresses, we become more and more dependent on computer technology to get tasks done. It’s pretty hard to imagine our lives without computers. Yet, does anyone ever ask, what is this dependency on digital labor doing to my eyes?

A study done in Sweden surveyed 1,246 computer users, from various professions, at 46 companies. The study showed that over 26% reported eye symptoms during the period. The study also showed significant associations with extended computer work, nicotine use, and sex (women were found to be at higher risk). So you may be thinking, “Oh no, what can I do?”

Well there’s a few tips:

1. Dim your monitor and let your eyes adjust – You don’t need your screen to be at 100% brightness to work efficiently on your machine. It’s like trying to stare at a bright light bulb for hours on end.

2. Follow the 20-20-20 rule – That is, for every 20 minutes you’re on the computer take 20 seconds to stare at something 20 feet away.

3. Look at something green – It’s a weird fact, but the color green is one of the most relaxing colors to look at so feel free to stare at your neighbor’s bamboo plant during your 20 second break.

4. If you have a spare $100 you can invest in some Gunnar eyewear. These lenses are designed to significantly reduce the strain of digital displays.
