6 Web Apps, One Weekend

Code Academy students this quarter have just finished up their first-ever startup weekend challenge. That’s six teams, six applications, and one weekend from start to finish.

If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of startup weekend, here’s how it works. Everyone has one minute to pitch their web app idea. Each person is given two votes to distribute and the top 6 ideas voted on move forward. Teams are formed organically around who is interested in what, and from Friday 5pm until Sunday 1pm, each team works day and night from scratch to build (and launch) MVP.

Here’s what they built:

AwChugIt

Team Members: JuanC Lugo, John Zurbach, Keith Mackey, Kori Roys, Steve Benjamins, Thomas Holland, Trey Springer

Find the best drinking games from around the world from your phone, no matter where you are.

Infographically

Team Members: Dan Lavin, Abhi Pillai, Ryan Verner, Nate Lassiter, Tomas Ordonez, Nate Kroll

Infographic.ly is a beautifully simple content aggregator that uses data visualization to help you make sense of the information you consume.

Wordzies

Team Members: Kevin Musiorski, Dave Levine, Robert Milner, Ben Block, Kevin Hoffman

A place to add, learn, and share new words.

MixtapeCademy

Team Members: Chris Courtney, Jim Challenger, Fabian Jahr, David Pardy, Robert Stevenson

Create your own mixtape, share, and bring the 90’s back, only cooler. A breakable toy to learn how to upload files to a webapp and use HTML5 to allow cross browser streaming.

BioValidate

Team Members: Peter Jabbour, Jordan Dalton, Patrick Carolan, Tim O’Meara, Spence Davenport

Mislabeling seafood is a growing health and fraud concern in the United States. BioValidate’s web application and services allow you to submit and validate seafood samples with a simple highly-accurate DNA test.

Digital-School House

Team Members: Adam Lupu, Adam Mark, Greg Cardoni, Eric MacAdie, Ryan Coon

A window into classrooms around the world.

A huge thanks to FeeFighters and ThoughtWorks for sponsoring us this weekend. And a big hug to our judges and mentors who took the time to help the teams out.
