Once upon a time, media companies needed printers to publish the news. If Stuart Frankel's newest startup takes off, they'll be able to do it without reporters, too.

Using algorithms developed by two Northwestern University professors, Narrative Science Inc. can construct news stories based on nothing but data. It began in 2010, writing game-recap articles from sports statistics. Since then, Chicago-based Narrative Science's developers have adapted the software so it can produce content on a variety of subjects including business. Among its newest clients: financial publication Forbes.
